Job overview

We are looking to appoint a new History Consultant to join our central team of History specialists. We want to hear from History specialists who have successful experience in a middle leadership role, and a track record of raising achievement within a department. The successful applicant will join an established team of history specialists, working closely with our wider subject expert team to further raise standards and love of History across the Harris Federation. The role of History Consultant is an exciting post providing enormous scope both for further progression and for a talented practitioner to gain experience across a group of academies.

Your opportunity

The role will be multi-faceted and involve coaching and mentoring, developing and sharing what works, assisting Harris academies in recruitment and selection, helping to establish new departments or lead rapid recovery where required. Our central team consultants work strategically with Principals, senior leadership teams and support departments to improve standards and outcomes for our students. The post holder will also have the opportunity to work with our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) team, offering subject mentoring to our in-house Harris trainee teachers.

Our consultant positions are an opportunity to develop and prepare you for senior leadership, including to Principalship, or progression in the leadership of our 50+ strong subject expert Consultant team. You will have the opportunity to advance your career within a Federation established in developing practitioners and nurturing excellent future leaders. We offer unrivalled opportunities for progression; whatever your aspirations as a senior leader, our Teaching School Alliance provides a range of bespoke courses and qualifications, including our Aspiring Leaders NPQSL and NPQH programmes to help you achieve your ambitions more quickly. The Federation operates twin Teaching Schools as well as a number of highly successful CPD Networks, the post holder would have the opportunity to play a key role in this work.

In line with the Government’s announcement, our academy is closed until further notice. However, during this period it is our intention to continue with critical recruitment for key positions starting in September 2020. In place of academy interviews, alternative options will be offered so that no one is at a disadvantage, and applicants should expect telephone or virtual interviews, with the possibility of onsite academy interviews only in special cases. We want to reassure applicants that effective measures have been implemented to ensure their health and wellbeing whilst on academy premises.

Thank you for your cooperation during this difficult time.

Who we are looking for:

We are looking for an experienced teacher with a deep passion for their subject. Our consultant roles are suitable for those with successful management experience (ideally but not necessarily at Head of Department level or alternatively be an aspirant Leading Practitioner). The post would suit an ambitious middle leader looking either to broaden their subject expertise and responsibilities, or who maybe considering a future leadership pathway to their first headship.

Whilst central team consultants have a base site at the Harris Federation Head Office near East Croydon Station (within 15 minutes of central London by rail and with fast access to the M25), consultants are expected to spend the vast majority of their time working on-site at academies. All Harris academies are located within a maximum 90-minute commute of each other, and it’s through this close network that consultants can share resources, knowledge and best practice, whilst working as a team to provide our academies with on-call support from the Harris Federation. As a consultant with the Harris Federation, you will receive a generous benefits package, including a Harris Allowance, performance and loyalty bonus, Teachers Pension Scheme, Harris wellbeing cash plan and additional Harris benefits.

What we are looking for:

The successful applicant will be resilient, creative and a dynamic practitioner, and must hold QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant degree. You will be fully supported through a comprehensive Induction Programme both within and across the Harris Federation.

  • QTS (or equivalent) and a relevant undergraduate degree
  • At least 4 years' teaching experience, and at least two years in a management role
  • The ability to teach History to A-Level

Harris Benefits

As part of the Harris Federation, we can offer you a range of benefits, including:

  • Unrivalled opportunities for leadership progression and preparing you for your first Principalship
  • Pension scheme (TPS) and access to our Harris Wellbeing Cash Plan, covering a range of health and wellbeing benefits

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.
