Job overview

The Harris Federation is a dynamic, highly successful and well established group of Academies, currently comprising 20 secondary Schools. We are a Federation rather than a chain, where each school is led autonomously and has its own unique character and ethos.

The Academies are all located in and nearby London and are relatively close to one another. Eighty percent of the Harris Secondary Academies so far inspected by Ofsted have been rated ‘Outstanding’, with the remaining 20 percent being judged as Good.

The role of History Consultant is an exciting post providing enormous scope for a talented and creative Historian to work alongside our established History Consultant and our wider expert central team.

We seek an outstanding teacher who has a successful track record of raising achievement in History in order to promote the highest standards of this key subject across the Harris Federation.

The role will be multi-faceted and involve coaching and mentoring, leading Heads of History across the group to further improvement, curriculum design, sharing what works, developing improvement strategies, assisting Harris Academies in recruitment and selection, helping to establish new departments, and assisting departments in new joiner schools. The Federation operates twin Teaching Schools as well as a number of very successful CPD networks. The post holder will have the opportunity to play a key role in this work. There will be many opportunities for future progression either in this role or subsequently in a leadership position within one of our Academies.

You will be an excellent teacher with a deep passion for History. You will possess management experience (ideally, but not necessarily at Head of Department level), or alternatively be an aspirant Leading Practitioner.

Although based at the Harris Federation offices close to East Croydon Station (with fast access to central London and the M25), the role will mostly be located within the Academies.

For further information, please download the Candidate Information Pack above or contact the careers team on 020 8253 7777 or careers@harrisfederation.org.uk.

If you would like a discussion in confidence about the post, please call Sir Dan Moynihan, Chief Executive, on 020 8253 7777.

Closing Date 10/02/2017

Harris Academies are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. All offers of employment are subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.

You can find out more on our website (www.harrisfederation.org.uk) or by following us on Twitter (@HarrisFed).
