Job overview

History Teacher

Scale- UQ/MPS/UPS (ECTs are welcome)

We are looking to appoint an ambitious and enthusiastic History teacher who is able to contribute to a thriving History department and Humanities Faculty. The successful candidate will have a strong academic background and will be able to show that they are able to inspire our students to love History and to succeed both within and beyond the classroom. Applications are welcome from both ECTs and experienced teachers. The ability to teach A Level History will be an advantage.

Why teach History at Whitefield School?

History is a successful and popular subject at Whitefield School, attracting consistently high student numbers at both KS4 and KS5. Our KS3 curriculum is broad, ambitious and diverse, reflecting the latest progressive thinking in History teaching. Our students learn about everything from Medieval Baghdad, to Mansa Musa’s Mali, to the Russian Revolution at KS3. We want our students to be equipped with both ‘powerful knowledge’ and transferable skills, which they can use to pursue whatever their interests are in the future. That said, we are also ambitious about nurturing students with a real passion for the subject and a life-long interest in History, with many of our students going on to study History at Russell Group universities, including Oxford University. For us, History is more than just a means to an end. We are also committed to giving our students opportunities to explore History beyond the classroom, regularly running trips to local museums and universities.

At GCSE, our students study the following papers as part of the AQA exam board: Elizabethan England; Conflict & Tension: the interwar years; Germany: democracy and dictatorship; and Migration, Empire and the People. This is a popular combination of papers that students are successful in studying; in 2022, 67% of our students secured a Grade 4+ with a progress score of +0.41. This included amongst the highest number of Grade 9s in the school. At A Level, History continues to be one of the most popular subjects, with students studying the Edexcel course: Rebellion and Disorder under the Tudors; India: The Road to Independence: In Search of the American Dream; and an NEA on the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Indeed, in 2022, our A*-C pass rate was 100%, with several students going on to study History at university.

The History Department sits within a fantastic Humanities Faculty that is closely involved in wider Teaching and Learning at Whitefield School. All staff at Whitefield School benefit from an excellent induction program as well as access to our extensive CPD opportunities. We are committed to being a research-informed school that constantly strives to be better for our students.

Whitefield is a rapidly improving school. Our examination results continue to rise year on year. But we still have ambitious plans for the future. The successful candidate will have access to CPD through our comprehensive research-informed internal and external CPD programme. The school also offers a range of benefits to all employees through our proactive staff Well-being Team.
