Job overview

Ofsted is a unique organisation to demonstrate and develop your skills and potential. As the non-ministerial government department that oversees the quality of education and care provision in England, Ofsted plays a vital role in the life outcomes of thousands of people every single year.

By becoming an HMI, you will join 1,700 employees working towards our shared goal of being ‘a force for improvement’ through inspection. Ofsted is determined that all learners should have the opportunity to succeed in life. You will share our passion for exceptional teaching and skills delivery.

With your work taking you into general further education colleges, prisons, sixth-form colleges and employers offering apprenticeships, no two days will ever be the same. After a comprehensive induction and training programme, you will carry out inspections that range from one to four days. You will use your knowledge and experience to turn broad-ranging information into clear judgements and easy-to-understand inspection reports. Your reports will help learners know where to study and support providers in improving the quality of what they deliver.

In addition to inspections, HMI can use the evidence we gather to carry out research projects, become an expert national lead in a specialist area and support our contracted inspection workforce – this is a role that offers great variety.

To rise to the challenge of being an HMI, you will need to have at least five years of leadership experience in a further education college or private training provider, for example, as a deputy principal or faculty leader. You will have experience of implementing change to achieve outcomes for learners. With solid leadership, communication and people management skills, you will have the resilience and drive to ensure that every evidence-led decision is justifiable. You will need a good awareness of the challenges currently faced by the sector. You will be committed to putting learners at the heart of every inspection.

In return, you can expect the full support of a network of inspectors, who meet regularly. With networking opportunities at conferences and team meetings, you will find this to be a social and progressive role. It is further enhanced by a generous benefits package that includes 40.5 days of annual leave (inclusive of bank holidays), membership into the Civil Service pension scheme, and an in-year performance award of up to £7,500 per annum. This is a role that offers so much more than career satisfaction.
