We are looking for an outstanding Head of Visual Arts to join our British School Team from 1 September 2024

The successful candidate will lead our Visual Arts Team across the British School (FS - KS5) overseeing Art curricular provision, and will work closely with our American School on cross school activities, the annual Alsson Art Exhibition concerts and other Visual Arts events. This full-time position has a teaching commitment attached to the role (<60%) teaching Middle School, IGCSE and A-level.  The successful candidate will join our Middle Leadership Team, comprising Heads of Subject / Department, Heads of Year, and whole school academic coordinators.  They will work to continue developing provision within the Department, including a cross-curricular dimension, as well as promoting international mindedness.  

As El Alsson moves into Academic Year 2024-2025, restoring both our regular, and headline Visual Arts events will continue to be a key area of focus to complement our curricular provision.  We look forward to enabling the successful candidate to bring their ideas and demonstrate their creativity, whilst also continuing to develop existing provision.

You will need:

  • A recognised Teaching qualification that meets the requirements of your home-country (e.g. B.Ed, PGCE, GDE etc)
  • Minimum 5 years post-qualification teaching experience in similar role and subject area

Skills and Knowledge

  • Experience of teaching Art across the full Secondary age range is essential. 
  • Have experience of a Visual Arts middle leadership post within a British style school either in the UK or internationally. 
  • Be experienced in the delivery of Art at IGCSE/GCSE/GCE/IAL and the UK National Curriculum at KS3. Experience of IBMYP and Art across the Primary age range is desirable but not essential. 
  • Experience in differentiating resources to adapt pedagogy is preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in interactions with both adults and children
  • Willingness and ability to work as part of a team, and to lead colleagues within the department team
  • Have excellent planning, organisation and communication skills
  • Have experience of developing extra-curricular programmes in performing arts
  • Be able to work collaboratively as part of several teams, showing sensitivity to the needs and interests of others, seeing the opportunities in everyday situations, thinking creatively, assessing and reacting to the context around them and wanting to be part of a successful team. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to prioritize, organize and communicate work
  • Be able to demonstrate an understanding of assessment and a knowledge of assessment practices across Music and/or Drama across the British School year groups 
  • Ability to work effectively to a high standard, on occasion, under pressure, meeting deadlines
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety & Safeguarding/Child Protection procedures and their application
  • Knowledge of computers and ability to use ICT tools for record-keeping and as an instructional tool
  • Ability to lead and develop provision of enrichment and extracurricular activities

The British School follows both the English National Curriculum and the International Early Years & Primary Curriculum, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, IGCSE & GCSE and GCE and IAL qualifications for students from FS1 to Year 13. The school also teaches the Egyptian national curriculum for Arabic studies, Social studies and Religion. Children at El Alsson are happy and achieve high academic standards and are respectful to all and  be tolerant to those in the diverse community they live within.
