Background to the post
St Michael’s School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school for students aged 11-18. We are seeking to appoint a person with energy and enthusiasm to support our programme of afterschool/weekend activities, and to join our Boarding team under the supervision of the Head of Boarding. This role will suit an individual who wants to gain experience within a boarding environment and support the pastoral care of our students but also have the skills to add to the activities and outdoor interests that we currently offer.
We have approximately 65 boarders from a diverse nationality mix thus providing a vibrant environment to work in and offering a role that by nature is extremely varied. On weekdays Monday/Tuesday/Friday duty will start from 15:30, initially providing an activity option, and after the evening meal assisting with cover duties in the senior boarding house, generally finishing at 22:30. Weekends are the most demanding duty days as you will be required to support any day trips/local excursions and evening cover, generally working 12 hour shifts (with meal/rest breaks) alongside other staff.
As part of boarding, this role supports the all-round pastoral care that students living away from home require. All staff have a responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the boarders and must enjoy and have the ability to engage with young teenagers effectively, whilst also promoting a high standard of behaviour and respect within each house. You should have experience in either education/working with young people or experience in a role working in a caring environment. You should be someone who can be assertive when required but also able to demonstrate a caring and empathetic nature. A sense of humour is essential along with good communication skills and a willingness to listen and engage with our boarders.
A small studio bedsit, located on campus is available, and this provides a modern bathroom, small kitchenette, and bedroom/sitting area It is only suitable for one person. Lunch and evening meals are provided when on duty. Parking is available on site, and we do recommend that the candidate has their own vehicle. Off duty time is Wednesday until Friday 15:00.
