Job overview

Background to the post

St Michael’s School is a co-educational independent day and boarding school for students aged 11-18.  We are seeking to appoint a residential House Parent for our Junior residence that accommodates students in Years 7-10. The House is in a new residential area just 2 miles from the main school and sits in the village of Llangennech, accommodating both girls and boys with a maximum of 22 students. This post is under the supervision of the Head of Boarding, and at weekends supported by activity staff, as well as a catering team who provide the evening meals.

Our boarders are from a diverse nationality mix thus providing a vibrant environment to work in and offering a role that by nature is extremely varied.  We are looking for an experienced House Parent to join our pastoral team and take responsibility for the wellbeing and welfare of pupils as well as domestic and administrative duties associated with the role.  Applicants will be on duty in the evenings and over the weekends, inclusive of overnight duties, providing the all-round pastoral care that students living away from home require.  All staff have a responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the boarders and must enjoy and have the ability to engage with young teenagers effectively, whilst also promoting a high standard of behaviour and respect within each house. We work across 3 terms; Autumn, Spring, Summer, approximately 39 weeks in total and boarding remains open across each half-term.

A self-contained living quarters is provided for the appointee offering a single bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and small living room. The house stands in its own gardens and this is available for staff use, as well as students. Parking is available on the site, and we do recommend that the candidate has their own vehicle. Off duty time is Monday once the students have left for school until Wednesday at 15:00. We will also offer one Sunday off within each half term.

You should have experience in either boarding/working with young people or experience in a role working in an educational environment.  You should be someone who can be assertive when required but also able to demonstrate a caring and empathetic nature.  A sense of humour is essential along with good communication skills and a willingness to listen and engage with our boarders.

Application method: Submission of your application via the TES online method.

Our university destinations are excellent and we enjoy the support of alumni who often return to share their experiences with existing pupils.
