Job overview

Situated on the beautiful Moray Coast in the north of Scotland, Gordonstoun was founded by the visionary educationalist Kurt Hahn, who is internationally recognised for his pioneering educational ethos. Rooted in the values of Service, Challenge and Compassion, our philosophy is centred on developing character, resilience and a sense of responsibility to others.

We are seeking an outstanding Housemaster to lead one of our senior boys' boarding houses and play a central role in the pastoral life of the School. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced boarding or pastoral leader, or for an ambitious colleague looking to take the next step in their leadership career within a world-renowned boarding environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a safe, supportive and thriving house community, providing exceptional pastoral care and guiding the personal development of the young people in their care. They will lead a dedicated house team, build strong relationships with pupils, parents and colleagues, and ensure the highest standards of wellbeing, safeguarding and boarding provision.

Gordonstoun is home to more than 500 pupils aged 4 to 18, predominantly full boarders, representing over 40 nationalities. Our distinctive educational experience extends far beyond the classroom, and we encourage all staff to engage fully in the rich life of the School. We are therefore looking for someone who is enthusiastic about contributing to boarding life, teaching within their subject specialism, and participating in the wide range of activities that make Gordonstoun unique.

This is a role for someone who believes in the transformative power of education, thrives on building positive relationships, and is committed to helping young people develop confidence, character and a strong sense of belonging. Above all, we are looking for a leader who embodies a positive, proactive and collaborative approach, and who shares our belief in Gordonstoun's motto:

"Plus Est En Vous" – "There is more in you."

Gordonstoun is striving to build a team that is truly inclusive. We welcome applications from marginalised and under-represented groups.

If you're excited to learn more, please contact our Recruitment Department at recruitment@gordonstoun.org.uk or call 01343 837831.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Tuesday 3 November 2026 at 11.00am for an August 2027 start.

Gordonstoun is known for the wide range of activities that it provides for girls and boys throughout the School's 6-18 age range. It has first-class facilities for these activities which include, in addition to all the normal subjects and many outdoor pursuits, expeditions, seamanship and a wide variety of rescue services.
The creative life of the School is vibrant and well developed, with Drama, Art, Music and Technology central to the life and ethos of Gordonstoun. There are opportunities for staff to contribute both in the role of expert or as an enthusiastic amateur.
Staff are deeply committed and, during term, work throughout the week, including weekends. The variety and range of our activities, coupled with a real commitment to work, indicate the School's aim to educate the whole person.
