Job overview

The College employs 160+ staff, all based on the one site. Most staff are salaried and permanent, however, we do have a varied range of contractual arrangements to reflect the flexible staffing required in a College environment – these include sessional staff, relief staff, fixed terms, variable hours and term-time contracts.

As the main HR role within College your work will be very varied and you will be pro-actively involved in all of the College’s key HR processes – including staff selection, induction, probation, performance management, training and support arrangements.  Although there is some HR administrative support provided, you will be responsible for much of the administration yourself and it is important that you are organised, accurate in your work and able to meet deadlines. You will also need good IT skills to be able to maintain and continue to develop our computerised HR records and systems.

At the same time the role needs an individual who is able to confidently provide practical advice to managers and staff on HR matters. You will, therefore, already have a good knowledge of employment legislation and best HR practice; you will also have the ability to quickly gain an understanding of College policies, procedures and practices.

You will have the skills to be sensitive and supportive of individuals whilst fully appreciating the operational and strategic needs of the College and the responsibility we have to our students.  It is a busy working environment and good prioritisation skills combined with a flexible approach are key in ensuring all demands are appropriately balanced. T

he post-holder will report to and be supported by the Director of Resources, Linda Jeffreys.  Applications from new entrants to the HR profession are welcome, as well as from experienced professionals. However, your previous experience and/or training must clearly reflect your potential to work at the appropriate level and demonstrate your practical understanding of HR issues. Experience of the educational sector is desirable, but not essential.

This is a challenging yet rewarding role and will provide you with a great opportunity to gain experience of all aspects HR within an educational establishment, whilst at the same time enabling you to play a key role in supporting the success of the College and its staff and students.

College Overview

Scarborough Sixth Form College is an open-access College, which provides general education primarily for 16-19 year olds in the area. The majority of our 1000+ students are full-time, and follow Advanced (level 3) courses from which most progress onto Higher Education.  The College has developed a very successful vocationally-related provision in a range of BTEC Nationals and we also offer a one-year Level 2 programme (our “Progression Year”) consisting of GCSEs in Maths, English and Science plus a range of BTEC Firsts.  Achievement at the College is high, and above national benchmarks, with outstanding positive value-added overall.  The College had an Inspection in December 2019 and was confirmed as a Good provider.

The College provides a pleasant environment in which to work, being set in attractive grounds on the edge of town. College campus facilities have been enhanced by almost £5 million investment. Scarborough itself offers an attractive coastline and beaches and is situated on the edge of the North York Moors, within easy reach of the City of York.
