The Holmewood School is looking for an inspirational and dynamic HR Manager. This is a great opportunity to join an educational organisation during a time of transformational growth.

The Holmewood School is an independent day school for neurodivergent children and young people aged from 7 to 19 who have a primary diagnosis of Autism. We are a member of the Cavendish Education Group. The school delivers holistic and integrated programmes of education, therapy and personal development for its students.

The HR Manager will work alongside the Senior Leadership Team and is responsible for the effective management of HR and associated HR administration within the School.

The role will be multifaceted and varied. Among other things, the successful candidate will be responsible for  -

  • Proactive, day to day management of HR and HR systems within the school across multiple sites.
  • Lead and manage all external and internal recruitment and selection.
  • Supporting the Head Teacher to ensure that appraisal, disciplinary and grievance processes are followed in accordance with employment law.
  • Attend Senior Leadership Team (SLT) meetings and provide HR advice and actions in accordance with employment law.
  • Engage in regular active dialogue with the Head Teacher about the school’s staffing structure to ensure effective deployment of staff and financial efficiency.
  • Manage and oversee the induction process, plan line manager meetings and ensure they are completed within the timeframe given.
  • Continually review legislation to ensure all policies and procedures are compliant.
  • Working with Peninsula, our third party providers, to lead and manage employee relations issues, such as disciplinaries or grievances
  • To lead activities and initiatives to improve staff wellbeing and morale.

For further information please see the Job Description.

The ideal candidate will be an ambassador for the school, who proudly speaks about the institution and what we are all collectively working towards. They will be an excellent communicator and networker, with impressive and proactive social abilities. They will expertly manage difficult conversations to produce positive outcomes. Excellent time management, technology and organisational skills will be expected.

The school is small but growing so we haven't had our own HR manager before. We have an excellent People Director in Cavendish Education and utilise the support of Peninsula and Bright HR, but as our needs have grown the Senior Leadership Team require further HR support. Therefore the HR manager would be required to help develop the role but also hit the ground running with recruitment and other Operational HR matters. The successful candidate will also have the support of a part time HR administrator.

The Holmewood School is located in North London on two sites. Our Lower School is conveniently situated directly opposite Woodside Park station on the Northern line. Our Upper School is located in leafy Muswell Hill (backing on to Alexandra Palace). We are opening a third site in Finchley Central in September. We work closely with the other schools in our group, have extensive community links and believe in ‘thinking differently’ and being as creative as possible in our work.

The role will be predominantly onsite at the school and it is a 52 week contract. Some flexibility may be possible in terms of remote working and those interested in a part time position are welcome to discuss this further with the Head Teacher.

Management experience will be essential and education experience would be ideal.

Closing date: Monday 5th of June 2023

Interviews will be held at The Holmewood School (site to be confirmed) week commencing Monday the 12th June 2023

About The Holmewood School

The Holmewood School is a growing independent day school for neurodivergent children and young people aged from 7 to 19 who have a primary diagnosis of Autism. Our young people are broadly similar to their mainstream peers in their academic ability but require support with communication and interaction, executive functioning, anxiety, functional skills and other needs related to their diagnosis. Many of our young people also have coaccurring diagnoses, such as ADHD and dyslexia.

We were awarded an Outstanding rating by Ofsted following their visit in May 2022 and we are proud to have Advanced Accreditation Status granted by the National Autistic Society.
