Job overview

UWC Atlantic College is a residential sixth form college, that enjoys a spectacular location at St. Donat’s Castle, perched above the Bristol Channel approximately 20 miles west of Cardiff.   We currently have 350 students aged between 17 – 19 years from over 90 nationalities studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) and taking part in an outstanding co-curricular programme of community service and outdoor education.   We are incredibly proud of our proven track record of exam results and commitment to experiential learning.

Reporting to the IT Network Managers, you will be responsible for helping maintain the college’s ICT and audio-visual equipment, dealing with any issues that occur and assisting with the development and implementation of new projects.

The college has a virtualised Windows 2016 domain, with around 240 Windows 10 64-bit PCs. Email is handled by two Exchange 2016 servers running in parallel to provide high availability and filtered by Clearswift Secure Email Gateway.   The college has a 1000 Mbit leased line internet connection. The firewall is a Smoothwall appliance, and all network switches are HP.

There is a Ruckus managed wireless network; students are encouraged to use their own devices (laptops, phones) to access the internet and College resources, and around 1500 devices are connected this way.    Staff and students can remotely access resources using Microsoft Remote Desktop Services. Data backup uses Veeam. The network is divided into VLANs, with wireless clients and telephony on separate VLANs. The college uses iSAMS to manage student data. There are various servers running departmental software.

The College has recently migrated to a hosted VOIP Telephone system, which sits behind its own firewall and has a web based management console. Skype for Business has also been implemented.  G-Suite for Education is also used as an online collaboration platform between all staff and students. This is a strong enabler for BYOD use within the college. Security on the colleges systems are governed by a variety of technologies which include; Group Policy, AppLocker, BitLocker and Sophos Central.

Along with good communication skills and the ability to prioritise and troubleshoot effectively, you will need to have experience of some or all of the following technologies: Windows Server, Exchange, Active Directory, Hyper-V, VMware, HP network switches and firewalls, VLANs, PC hardware.

Experience of any of the following technologies would also be advantageous: SQL Server, Sage, G-Suite, Veeam, IIS, IP and POTS telephony.

Salary: circa £22,000 - £25,000 per annum.

ATLANTIC COLLEGE: Background

UWC Atlantic is at the heart of a powerful global movement and at the vanguard of progressive education worldwide.  We are proud to be a part of the UWC family of 18 schools and colleges worldwide – and for our courage to champion the values, ideas and aspirations in which we all believe.  We are driven by the UWC mission to make education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future.  It drives everything we do.

We continue to embrace the spirit of those pioneers who not only created the College in Wales in 1962 and launched the UWC movement in 1967 but who also co-created the International Baccalaureate Diploma programme, in collaboration with the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) and UN International School in New York (UNIS).

Our multicultural student body, from over 90 countries every year, comprises young people from vastly differing political, religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.  They are selected to attend UWC Atlantic based on their demonstrated promise and potential, to make a difference in the fields of sustainability, social justice and peace.  These inspirational young people are the next generation of change makers, empowered to go on to careers and lives that create impact locally, nationally and globally.

The first of 18 United World Colleges now located across the Globe, UWC Atlantic  was inspired by educationist Kurt Hahn to engage young people from all nations in finding peaceful means to bring together a world divided by political, racial and social barriers.

UWC Atlantic was the first school in the UK (in 1971) and also one of the first colleges in the world to follow an international curriculum. It continues to lead the way in pioneering new options for the International Baccalaureate Diploma which its students study over a two year period.
