Job overview

Audit and Risk Commitee Members

Audit and Risk Committee Members (Independent)

St John has two charities - The Priory of St John and St John Ambulance. The Priory oversees the whole range of activities carried out by St John in England and the Islands (e.g. Honours and Awards, Historic Buildings, Museum, Fundraising, St John Ambulance). However, the majority of operational activity is delegated to St John Ambulance.

St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so that they can save lives. It is the nation’s leading first aid charity with a turnover of around £100M. Around 30,000 volunteers and 2,000 employees provide first aid at events, support the ambulance service, teach first aid to employees in the workplace, to young people in schools and through its youth programmes.

We are seeking three independent members of the Audit and Risk Committee to provide an important balance to the governance of the Committee’s responsibilities. The role will enable you to use your skills and experience to offer challenge to management. There will be an opportunity to scrutinise financial reporting to ensure the charity is meeting its requirements, as well as monitor the effectiveness of the management of the charity’s risks.

The role will give you the opportunity to share your knowledge of governance and provide a unique way to be part of the nation’s leading first aid charity.

There are four meetings per year and, including reading the relevant papers and performing some ad hoc tasks, it is expected that the role will require a commitment of 6 days per year.

Interviews will be held on the 12th April in London.

About St John Ambulance (SJA)

At St John Ambulance we believe everyone should get the chance to learn how to save a life, so that whenever a first aid emergency occurs, whether in the home, workplace or community, someone is on hand with the skills to help.

Every year, 400,000 people learn first aid through our training programmes, including hundreds of thousands of young people. Our volunteers provide first aid in their communities, keeping people safe at events, and working alongside the NHS in response to 999 calls. We generate around £100m per annum which we reinvest in delivering and campaigning for better access to first aid for everyone. By doing this, we can give people the chance to learn basic first aid skills that they wouldn't otherwise get the opportunity to learn.

First aid is such a simple skill, but it has an incredible impact.

We want everyone to learn it, so that they can be the difference between a life lost and a life saved.
