Glenealy School is seeking to appoint an Individual Needs Teacher. The position will be a full-time two years contract starting August 2021, renewable by mutual consent. See ESF Terms and Condition  for further details o f the package.

Role Summary

The IN teacher will be a part of our Individual Needs team and work across the school. The students who have been identified for special educational provision, are supported through mainstream class placements. At Glenealy there is not a specific class of children with special educational needs. For this reason, we are looking for a primary teacher with relevant experience/and or SEN qualifications to support Individual Needs students inside and outside of the classroom. The right candidate must have a genuine interest to work with children with special educational needs and have an understanding of the challenges students face in order to support students and meet their needs. The teacher must be confident to write and lead Individual Education Plans (IEP) and liaise professionally with parents and paraprofessionals.

The main role of the IN teacher is to maximise the learning and development of targeted IN students. This will be achieved through the planning, preparation and teaching of programmes which meet students’ individual learning needs and specific student outcomes; liaising closely with the students’ mainstream class teacher and Educational Assistant. The role will also include case management of specific children including the writing, implementation and reviewing of the IEP in conjunction with all stakeholders.

Main Accountabilities Teaching and Learning:

  • Planning lessons and sequences of lessons to meet students’ individual learning needs and to ensure - student’s progression including the planning and preparation of teaching programmes (e.g. IEPs) to meet student’s individual needs.
  • Assessing impact of interventions and progress being made.
  • Providing clear and constructive feedback to students, their parents and caregivers through reporting and termly IEP meetings.
  • Working closely with mainstream teachers to ensure appropriate differentiation and support to promote the inclusion of students with individual needs.
  • Planning lessons and sequences of lessons for delivery by educational assistants. 
  • Liaise and work closely with other members of the IN team including the leader of IN and a number of EAs that work in the department.
  • Using a range of appropriate strategies for teaching and learning and classroom management.
  • Using flexible groupings and structured inquiry to deliver high quality lessons in line with the IB PYP approaches and philosophy.
  • Using learning technologies to enhance learning. 
  • Using information about prior attainment to set expectations for students.
  • Using a range of assessment and reporting methods that show student’s achievement in relation to learning outcomes.
  • Supporting student well being
  • Supporting whole school organisation e.g. attending assemblies, staff meetings and other events as necessary


Qualifications and experience Required

  • Bachelor degree in Education or Bachelor degree in any subjects with PGCE (Post graduate Certificate in Education) or equivalent
  • 2+ years teaching experience within a recognised educational organization and in the area of Individual Needs
