· Demonstrate a sound understanding teaching and learning practices, including using assessment for learning effectively

· Be able to ensure that every child is challenged to achieve their best

· Contribute to the wider life of the school

· Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and a sense of team play

· Relish the challenges and opportunities that come with a position in an international context in China

· Comprehensive medical insurance

· Annual flights

· School funded housing

· Relocation allowance

· Free tuition for accompanying children

About our school

Known locally as Qingdao HD Bilingual School, Hurtwood House Qingdao

is affiliated with Hurtwood House UK, in Surrey and owned by the EliteK-12 organisation. Hurtwood House China opened its first school in 2014.

Our mission is to nurture and develop global Chinese citizens, who develop an appreciation for the international context, whilst ensuring they hold onto their cultural heritage. We believe that education creates character and focus on personal development and progress in equal measure to academics.

We follow a Dual Immersion Curriculum; our students receive lessons in both English and Chinese, each teacher teaching the sessions of their home language and the remainder of the curriculum being shared between them and a small number of subject specialist teachers. Our international curriculum is based around the National Curriculum for England, adapted to suit our particular context.

We benefit from exceptional facilities on  our campus including:

· A Bilingual library

· Specialist teaching classrooms such as art studios and science laboratories

· A Multi-functional theatre

· Excellent indoor sports areas for tennis, football and basketball

Living in China

Life in China can be an adventure and is certainly not for the faint hearted. Our teachers invariably come across colleagues who have been in China for as long as twenty years, while others will stay for only two or three. However long you choose to stay, China is sure to leave an impression on you – nowhere else in the world can you experience such a wide range of foods or encounter such a rich and vibrant history. At times life in China can be frustrating for international professionals, with local customs and norms influencing day to day life in ways the uninitiated cannot begin to imagine, yet the rewards, convenience and quality of life that come from working in China more than balance this. Life here is certainly different but for those who can adapt to it, it has the opportunity to be so much better!

HD Qingdao opened in August 2018 with the launch of the Primary section of the School with the Secondary phase following in 2020. The School is located on Xingguang Island, in the West Coast area of the City and is part of the new Wanda Oriental Movie Metropolis - a US$7billion project, creating a new economic centre for the region and the world’s largest entertainment infrastructure development.

HD Qingdao is an important addition to the region, offering an outstanding international education that blends the best of British and Chinese curricula on a beautiful campus.  The architectural design of the School is based on the British boarding style, with red brick as its predominant feature.  The campus occupies a substantial site and will eventually accommodate up to 2000 students.

The curriculum at HD Qingdao will offer a broad range of opportunities designed to develop intellectual growth, physical and emotional health, artistic endeavours, creativity and service to others.  As with other HD Schools, HD Qingdao is committed to fostering genuinely bilingual and bicultural students, enabling them to gain competency in Mandarin and English, as well as preparing them culturally for life in an increasingly interconnected world.  In addition to supporting students to become bilingual, the low pupil to teacher ratio will enable HD Qingdao to deliver a highly personalised approach to learning.

In keeping with our partner school, Hurtwood House, HD Qingdao’s ethos, values and curriculum will help foster a strong, supportive school community.  Hurtwood House has the strongest reputation for film, theatre and performing arts of any school in the UK, and therefore the proximity of HD Qingdao to the Movie Metropolis provides additional opportunities for the School and its students.

Joining HD Qingdao, and by extension the Hurtwood House China family of schools, is an opportunity to play a part in one of the most exciting educational projects of our time.  We are leading the way in the provision of a bilingual and bicultural education to Chinese nationals, within a Chinese context, and with the support of an exceptional UK brand.

Joining HD Qingdao as a teacher will be exceptionally rewarding; you can expect to play a significant part in shaping the School’s future, and contributing to the development of one of the best bilingual learning environments in China.  The blend of Chinese and international experts within our schools creates a creative and progressive environment, in which staff are constantly sharing ideas, reflecting on their practice, and thus developing professionally.

We recognise that the success of HD Qingdao depends on the quality, wellbeing, and motivation of our staff. International leaders and teachers can therefore expect an excellent set of benefits, including

  • a highly competitive salary and expatriate package.
  • a commitment to professional development.
  • a dedicated and passionate human resources and support team, committed to making life in China as comfortable as possible.
  • opportunities to contribute to Hurtwood House China group-level strategy and practice.
  • career progression opportunities that arise from being part of a rapidly expanding education group in a dynamic market.
