John Chilton School is a successful school for pupils who have complex physical, medical and learning difficulties. We are innovative in our approach to educate pupils with a range of cognitive, physical and medical needs (4-19 years). We aim for our pupils to become confident, independent and motivated members of the community.

The school has two sites collocated within mainstream academies. The post holder will be expected to work across both sites and on the site with the identified pupil.

This post is to support an identified pupil who is profoundly deaf with complex health needs due to CHARGE syndrome, to achieve full access to learning within the school curriculum. This will include enabling the pupil towards full inclusion into the wider experiences of the educational setting of the school, whilst promoting, at all times, their independence. The role is subject to conditions including funding for this post and is linked to a specific pupil attending the school.

You will:

  • have at least a level 2 BSL qualification and a commitment to attain level 5
  • be confident in communicating with families with BSL as a first language
  • have a good general standard of education (to include English, maths and preferably ICT at GCSE grade 4-9 or equivalent)
  • be proficient in the use of relevant ICT equipment and packages including tablets, switches, Microsoft Office.
  • have experience of working with and supporting children with Special Educational Needs specific to the area of Sensory Impairment.
  • be suitably qualified in working with children and young people with Hearing Impairment, Visual Impairment or Multi-Sensory Impairment or willing to attend training regarding specific difficulties associated with Multi-Sensory Impairment
  • be hard working and committed to work with the identified pupil (presently Reception aged) across the age range
  • show initiative and the ability to be spontaneous;
  • understand that behaviour is a communication of need, and use a positive behaviour approach;
  • be a good team player who is willing to contribute to the ethos and wider community of the school

At John Chilton School we want our staff team to reflect the rich cultural diversity of the school and local community. We would like to employ staff that help us achieve our ambition of being a proactive anti-racist school, that empowers all our pupils, staff and families, and enables all to achieve and grow.

Candidates are welcome to visit the school. Please contact Andrea Keogh to arrange a suitable date and time.

We are committed to safer recruitment, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful applicant will be required to apply for an Enhanced Disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS). Further information can be found at: https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/dbs-checking-service-guidance--2

Candidates who have lived or worked abroad may require an overseas police check and may be asked to provide a good conduct certificate. Further information can be found at www.gov.uk

In line with KCSIE 2023 and safer recruitment practices, the school will conduct an online search for all shortlisted candidates. The online search is part of our safeguarding checks and will seek publicly available information on candidates’ suitability to work with children.

John Chilton School is a mixed Community Special School funded by Ealing Local Authority for pupils aged 4-19 years who may have moderate to severe learning difficulties as a primary need or as a dual diagnosis to their medical or physical needs.

Our secondary department is uniquely located within the all-age Alec Reed Academy (ARA) building. This provides opportunities for inclusion and integration where appropriate for individuals. Pupils from both schools can share opportunities and advantages.

Our primary department is co-located at Wood End Primary School (WEP) in Greenford. As JCS expands the WEP site is being redeveloped for our pupils, with a view to total occupancy in 2024. JCS and WEP look for opportunities for social inclusion through events and curriculum integration opportunities are possible.
