About Oakbank School
Oakbank School is a Foundation co-educational comprehensive school catering for students aged 11 to 19. It has approximately 1650 students, of whom 200 are in our sixth form. We take in 300 pupils a year. Foundation status means that we are a local authority maintained school but we are our own employers, run our own admissions policy, own our own land.
Since 2011 we have put “Student Achievement First” at the heart of everything we do. Our results (41% in 2010 to 51% in 2012 5A*-CEM, the Sixth Form is regarded as excellent) are improving but we still have a lot of work to do before we can become an outstanding school.
The school is on a very pleasant extensive site. It has a full range of facilities, including playing fields, an artificial turf pitch, sports hall, 2 gyms, drama studio, dance studio, music and practice rooms, design and technology areas, 13 science laboratories, a highly praised learning centre and many other specialist areas. We also have a specialist Learning Support Unit. We have a separate sixth form block. In July 2012 we have been selected to be part of the “Priority Schools Building Programme” and are awaiting details on how we can deliver a 21st Century learning environment.
We see ourselves as a dynamic school that sees change as a driver for improvement. In 2012 we changed the timing of the school day, leadership structure, re-established the house system etc. In 2013 we will introduce a radical new curriculum that will provide appropriate pathways for all our students.
We also believe that school is more than just lessons. We were a specialist sports college and have a tradition of sporting success in football, rugby league, netball, badminton, track and field and in 2012 we became an All Rugby school, one of only a hundred comprehensive schools in the country chosen by the RFU. In addition we have over 100 students taking part in a production of “Les Miserables” due to be performed in March 2013.
