Job overview

Support for Learning Coordinator (Junior School)

Full-Time, Permanent

Due to the retirement of the current role holder, we are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced Teacher of Support for Learning to join our successful Department from August 2022. The successful applicant will coordinate the work of our Support for Learning teachers in the Junior School.

The Support for Learning Department at Heriot’s has seen significant development in recent years and enjoys an excellent reputation, which reaches beyond the School itself.  The Department currently consists of the Head of Support for Learning, Senior School and Junior School Support for Learning Coordinators, one full-time member of the Department and three part-time members. The school also benefits from a part-time Educational Psychologist.

Our Support for Learning is a busy all through school department working with pupils in the Junior School and Senior School.  Through its assessment and referral system, it identifies pupils experiencing difficulties at an early age and aims to establish profiles of learning needs, prioritising key areas to target.  By giving advice to teaching staff and parents and by working co-operatively in pupils’ classes or by extracting the pupils, it aims to meet these needs and work towards allowing the pupil to demonstrate their knowledge as independently as possible.

Support for Learning values the knowledge and experience of the class and subject teachers and aims to enhance those skills by ensuring that teachers are familiar with strategies which may help their teaching of pupils who may need a differentiated approach.

Applications will be welcome from Primary backgrounds though the post is likely to involve a small proportion of time in Senior School.

In addition to the skills and attributes detailed in the Job Description (please see link below), the successful candidate will also have:

• previous experience of working with pupils who have additional support needs

• qualifications in the field of additional support needs or significant experience in a Support for Learning role

• knowledge of current legislation in the field of additional support needs

• familiarity with assessment material to aid in the identification of pupils’ needs

In addition to curricular responsibilities, the successful candidate will be expected to participate fully in the extra-curricular life of the School.

All applicants must be registered, or eligible for registration, with the GTC Scotland.

The school day for pupils commences at 8:35 and finishes at 3:15. Teachers are expected to be in school in advance of the school day and to contribute to the extra-curricular programme outwith school hours as arranged.
