An unusual and exciting opportunity has come up for the role of Junior MIS Developer to support the Senior MIS Developer and MIS Developer in maintaining and further developing our sophisticated in-house web-based college software applications, as well as potentially designing and developing new ones in the future.  Our web applications serve many functions and are widely used across the college and outside the college by teaching/support staff, students, applicants, and parents, and the way they look and operate in some ways represents the college, for example in the case of Online Application and the ParentPortal systems which are public-facing and used by people who are external to Wyke College.

The successful candidate will be a highly capable, innovative and passionate developer/programmer, with some programming skills, ideally (though not necessarily) with proven experience in web-based programming languages including HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, MySQL and SQL server, and a good understanding of relational databases and data structures. 

To be successful in this role, it is essential to have the appropriate attitude and aptitude, with the necessary potential and the passion to quickly learn new skills and to gain the necessary experience required for understanding existing code and complex problems, developing and supporting sophisticated web applications (from the design of intuitive, user-friendly and secure graphical front-end interfaces to the back-end functionality), data structures, data storage/reporting and how the in-house systems meet particular needs and reflect the processes that take place in a sixth form college. Good programming practice, structure and use of explanatory comments in the code is essential and the successful candidate will be trained in these skills.  Without a serious, genuine enthusiasm for programming and learning it will not be possible to succeed in this role.


Day to day tasks would include working (under the direction of the MIS Developer) in:

  • Problem-solving issues with the existing web-based applications/systems

  • Suggesting and making improvements to the systems and development of new functionality

  • Producing system and user documentation for the systems

  • Scoping, analysing, planning, designing, coding and testing new web systems

  • Assisting the MIS Developer and Senior MIS Developer in various tasks, as required.

It would be advantageous, but not essential, for the candidate to have knowledge on the following technologies:

  • HTML

  • CSS

  • PHP

  • JavaScript/jQuery

  • Ajax

  • MySQL/SQL script languages

The ability to work independently as well as working as part of the MIS Development Team is crucial in this role, as is the ability to learn very quickly (from others and individually), understand complex code and abstract concepts, find solutions to very large and challenging problems/processes (e.g. timetabling, enrolment, room booking), and listen to staff, students and parents to understand what they need a system to do and how it should look. The right candidate will be given extensive training in all the technologies above and with the right enthusiasm, dedication, and attitude will quickly grow in skill, understanding and experience to become an outstanding web developer.

Wyke is a successful and highly ambitious Sixth Form College whose aim is to be the best college in the country. We are an established, popular College with an outstanding reputation in the locality. The college draws students from Kingston-Upon-Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and further afield. The largest and one of the most successful A-level provider in the area, we offer applicants the opportunity to work alongside committed colleagues who have enabled our students to achieve high levels of success. At Wyke we put the student first and all decisions centre around staff working together to meet their best interests.

We currently have over 2000 students and around 200 members of staff. We offer a wide range of A Level courses as well as some highly successful Vocational CTEC and BTEC (VOC) courses, both those equivalent to one, two and three A-levels, and a small number of GCSEs.

Each A-level, GCSE or VOC is allocated 4 x 70 minute lessons and a full time teacher will teach 5 of these ‘blocks’. The teaching day begins at 9a.m. and finishes at 4p.m. On some mornings full staff or faculty briefings are held at 8.45a.m. to keep staff up to date with what is happening around the college and allow a time for them to catch up with each other.

We have an excellent team of staff and their continuing professional development is a priority at Wyke. The approach for this was recently revised so that so that members of staff fall into one of a number of development strands e.g. ‘Aspiring Leaders’, ‘Lead Learners’, ‘Pastoral’, ‘Administrative’. Some development activities take place on one of the four Development Days spread across the year while other sessions are during afternoon workshops or independent activity which happens whenever is convenient for the staff members involved. Our plan is that every member of staff will have an entitlement to a significant amount of development every year and we also offer a system for people to log that development, including any activities undertaken independently.
