Job overview

ISA Co-educational Day School with 650 pupils on roll (3 – 18)

We require, for May 2023, a well-qualified and enthusiastic class teacher, initially for one of our junior classes. The ideal candidate will be energetic, have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire and motivate students, and to make learning fun. They will have outstanding classroom control and the ability to create an effective learning environment.

The Lewes Old Grammar School Junior School, Morley House, caters for children from Pre-Reception to Year 6, and is located on a separate site in a large Edwardian building in a pleasant residential area of Lewes.

Our small classes are tailored so that children have a range of experiences, sometimes working in mixed ability groups, and at other times in groups where their needs can be supported more specifically, by either stretching them beyond the content of the normal curriculum, or supporting areas of weakness.

The staff to pupil ratio is high, and children learn and play in a safe and creative environment, and we are committed to offering our pupils a truly personalised education.

At our school we focus on the whole child, and alongside classroom teaching teachers contribute to the wider school community by running extra-curricular clubs and pastoral initiatives. Many teachers have a subject specialism and teach other year groups in addition to their own.

Lewes Old Grammar School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Our school motto is ‘Life Long Love of Learning’ and to that end we follow the simple view that pupils who enjoy the subject will engage in it, grow in confidence and will have the opportunity to excel. If you feel that you can play a strong and supportive role, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Due to the need to appoint quickly we reserve the right to interview and appoint at any stage of the process.

Values and vision

Lewes Old Grammar School is committed to creating an environment where each individual is known and cared for. Students are supported to achieve their academic potential. Teachers strive to develop young people who are at ease with themselves and confident to face the challenges of life.

Central to the school’s vision is the conviction that each child is an individual who has valuable capabilities. The curriculum provides opportunities that teach students how to think, rather than simply what to think. Questions are valued above answers and the pursuit of excellence is valued above standardised performance.
