This school caters for pupils aged 9 to 13 years in the Flitwick area. It receives pupils mainly from the Lower schools of Flitwick, Kingsmoor, Templefield and Flitwick Lower and then, in turn, passes most of them on to Redborne Upper school to complete their schooling.

Woodland is a purpose built school which was opened in September 1973 with a second phase of building opening in 1976 featuring two semi open plan blocks for the younger children. Between July 1987 and March 1989 new extensions and alterations were made to the buildings, enabling excellent facilities to be offered to the pupils of this school. Further extensions, only completed in December 1999, have resulted in a new block of six classrooms, toilets and two changing rooms. The school currently has three science laboratories, specialist rooms for food and textiles, art and craft and resistant materials. There are three very well equipped computer rooms, a library/resources area, in addition to a variety of classrooms adapted for specialist or general teaching. We also have two music rooms, two peripatetic rooms, a hall which is used for dance/drama, year assemblies and school meals, and a large well equipped sports hall. Outside facilities include a paved courtyard, a hard playground area, hard surface tennis courts and sufficient playing fields for rugby, soccer and hockey pitches in winter and a running track plus other pitches in summer.

During Year 5 some of the work is carried out with a particular form teacher. In Year 6 slightly less time is spent with the form teacher and there is more introduction to specialist areas. At Key Stage 2 the pupils are set for Literacy and Numeracy. In Years 7 and 8 a degree of specialism is increased and pupils come into contact with a greater number of teachers in more specialist circumstances. At Key Stage 3, pupils will be set for French, Mathematics and Science with a degree of "blocking" in English to provide further flexibility. The aim in both these years is to ensure that in these subjects each pupil is working in a group commensurate with his/her abilities and capabilities. These sets are flexible, allowing any pupil to change sets according to progress made or assistance required. Children with Special Needs will be given some help by a specialist in that field.

The welfare of each pupil is the concern of every member of staff, but initially the form teacher is responsible for pastoral care with overall supervision by the appropriate Year Group Leader, Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher respectively.
