Job overview

Horizons Academy Bexley is an alternative provision academy which works in close partnership with the two SEMH schools in London Borough of Bexley.  All three Academies are part of London South East Academies Trust (LSEAT) and had worked together for a number of years as a hard federation prior to this as New Horizons Federation.  Our schools provide education for pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 as well as working closely with our stakeholders in creating solutions for pupils at risk of permanent exclusion.  Horizons Academy is an all through school which is commissioned by the Local Authority to provide education for permanently excluded pupils but also offers a broad range of preventative programmes and reintegration support to enable pupils to access education which is most appropriately matched to their needs.

We are currently seeking to recruit an experienced KS3 Teacher who is able to deliver across all core subjects, ICT, PSHE, PE and project based work with students.  It is our aim that all of our KS3 pupils reintegrate successfully back to their home schools or onto new provisions.  KS3 students attend for a maximum of 14 weeks and in this time we focus on closing the academic gaps students may have, developing core skills and changing behaviour and attitude to support their return to a mainstream setting. This post would be suitable for a Primary or Secondary trained teacher that can teach across all subjects identified.  The successful candidate will join a committed team of staff who strive to achieve best outcomes for our learners and work relentlessly with them to address the social, emotional and behavioural difficulties which have been a barrier to success in mainstream schools.  We are very much a learning environment and promote high expectations of behaviour and aspirational goals for all of our pupils whilst acknowledging that progress requires endless patience and perseverance to overcome the often low self esteem and external issues presented by our population.

This is an opportunity for an experienced and skilled practitioner to make a real difference to children’s lives.  A proven background in managing challenging behaviour alongside evidence of securing successful academic outcomes are essential requirements.

If you have enthusiasm, commitment and a desire to work with some of the most vulnerable and complex young people in our community, we would welcome your application.  High aspirations and a relentless approach towards excellence are the key skills we are looking for along with evidence of previous outstanding classroom teaching.

For further information and an informal conversation about the role, please contact Alan Farrell (Head of School) on 0208 312 2746.

Start: September 2019

About Horizons Academy Bexley

Horizons provides high quality support to pupils in Key Stages 1–4 who have been permanently excluded (or are at risk of exclusion) from mainstream school.

We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4. Our expert team works intensively with post-16 pupils to secure destinations whilst providing ongoing support. This helps ensure that all pupils can maintain their educational placements, training programmes and/or employment.

Our aim in Key Stages 1–3 is to re-integrate pupils back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child and develop the child’s own ability to learn, so that they feel confident about being in the classroom.

We have created an environment and developed a curriculum which supports our pupils to become well rounded citizens and able to productively contribute to the community. We want all our young people to feel confident about their future and in their own ability to live a successful, meaningful life.
