Job overview

St Anthony’s is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and well-qualified Class Teacher who will be responsible for the academic and pastoral development of boys in Key Stage 1. The person appointed will be an engaging classroom practitioner committed to the learning and progress of all boys. They will have very high professional standards, be an excellent verbal and written communicator, and deliver lessons using a range of resources that help foster a love of learning. The successful candidate will articulate a clear vision for education combining traditional and contemporary methods of teaching and will offer ideas for integrating digital literacy into the curriculum. Contributions to the co-curricular programme i.e. sport and hobbies are welcome.

Class Teachers play a crucial role in supporting the wellbeing and welfare of pupils specifically under their care. There are about twenty boys in each form with the Class Teacher acting as the key link between home and school. The Class Teacher will know their charges well and serve as the link between home and school. Applications from practising and well-qualified Catholics are encouraged; all teachers at St Anthony’s, irrespective of religious affiliation, are expected to be sympathetic to the Catholic ethos of the school. The person appointed will be expected to deliver PSHEE and (most likely) RE lessons, the content of which is stipulated by the Catholic Diocese of Westminster.

A Faculty structure was introduced last September as well as new schedules for assessment, tracking and reporting. The publication of half-termly learning snapshots aim to create an academic ‘flightpath’ for each pupil from Reception all the way through to key departure points at the end of Year 6 or Year 8. A dedicated ‘Wellbeing Room’ was recently opened and the school avails the services of a trained counsellor one full day each week.

Although we take our work seriously, St Anthony’s offers a warm and supportive professional environment where careers are developed and meaningful relationships forged.

APG is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief and marriage and civil partnerships.

About St Anthony's School for Boys

Brief History

St Anthony’s is a Catholic Preparatory School (IAPS) for boys aged 4 – 13. It is Roman Catholic but welcomes boys of other faiths. There are currently over 310 pupils on roll and the school is looking to increase this number to 330 over the next few years. The majority of boys transfer to leading Independent schools.

St. Anthony’s school was founded by Richard Patton during the Victorian period in Eastbourne. It moved to its Hampstead location in 1952 and has been managed by the Alpha Plus Group since 2009.

Ethos and values

The school operates a two-form entry with approximately 20 boys in each class from Reception up to and including Year 6. About half the year group leave St Anthony’s to join Year 7 senior schools including UCS, City of London and Highgate. The remaining pupils stay on to prepare for Common Entrance at the end of Year 8 before proceeding to leading boarding and day schools such as Harrow, Eton, St Paul’s and Westminster.

The school is not super-selective and promotes a caring, nurturing environment promoting the holistic education of each child. We speak of St Anthony’s as a greenhouse rather than a hothouse! Pastoral and academic expectations are high amongst parents and staff. The school adds significant value to pupils’ learning and there is great emphasis on regular communication between boys, staff and pupils.

St Anthony’s achieved ‘Excellent’ in all categories of the ISI full-school inspection in November 2019 - the school is now pursuing an ambitious development plan incorporating digital literacy with outstanding academic, pastoral and co-curricular provision.
