Job overview

Our Mission

Black Rhino Academy International School believes that learning is about more than academics. Our approach emphasises critical thinking, problem solving, and interactive experiences. We instil in our students a love of learning and global citizenship through play, inclusivity and respect for each other.

About us

We are a non-profit registered in Tanzania with support through a German foundation to support building the school, supplement local school fees and provide scholarships. We opened in 2018 and currently have reception to Year 2 classes and for the 2019/20 school year this will go up to Year 3. With a total 22 students we are still a small but growing school.

The position

Unlike many other international schools in Tanzania, we put more emphasis on being staffed by Tanzanian teachers. In addition to providing high quality education to children from Tanzania and abroad, we also find it important to build more capacity in our Tanzanian teachers. We currently have 3 local teachers in Reception Class to Year 2 and are specifically looking for an international teacher willing to mentor our Tanzanian teachers. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching KS1 and/or KS2 as well as experience working with young teachers in training.

This position is an opportunity for an experienced teacher to pass on their knowledge to young and curios teachers ready for a challenge. The mentor teacher will also be teaching most of the Year 2 and 3 English lessons to expose our students to more native English speakers.

Black Rhino has very recently been accredited by Cambridge International, therefore the mentor teacher will play a big role in how we adapt the curriculum. As a young and innovative organisation the right candidate will have the opportunity to participate in senior management decisions and help shape Black Rhino’s future.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong understanding of the British or Cambridge International Curriculum
  • At least 8 years experience teaching at the primary level
  • Possesses a strong work ethic
  • Enjoys engaging with children, faculty and volunteers in both a formal and informal capacity
  • Approaches challenges with a positive outlook
  • Possesses a strong sense of cultural competency, intuition, and empathy
  • Knowledge of Swahili or East African culture/history an advantage
  • Has worked/studied/lived overseas or taught in cross-cultural contexts
  • Takes initiative in a professional environment with minimal supervision, and is able to design and deliver original lessons
  • Passionate about being part of a brand new school

Our Package

  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Annual flight allowance
  • Accommodation
  • Health Insurance
  • Visa/Residence Permit (processing handled by the school)
