Ackworth School, a co-educational boarding and day school, was founded in 1779 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). It maintains its ethos and traditions, and is still governed by the Society, although only a small number of pupils are from the Quaker tradition. The school is academically non-selective and provides an excellent range of facilities and extra-curricular opportunities. The Head is a member of both HMC and the Society of Heads.

Coram House is the Junior School and is located within the Senior School campus yet remains largely independent in terms of day to day organisation. Facilities shared with Senior School include a modern sports hall, indoor swimming pool, gym, music centre and theatre.

In addition there is a nursery for children aged 2¾ to 4 years led by the Nursery Manager.

Ackworth School is seeking to appoint a well-qualified, enthusiastic class teacher for Coram House. Whilst the appointment is currently to a KS1 class, we rotate our teachers between the key stages at the beginning of each academic year in order to develop the experience of our staff and to fit with our cohorts. Teachers deliver lessons in both Key Stages.

We are seeking a committed primary practitioner with a sound understanding of child development and a desire to drive the curriculum forward in new and exciting way. The post would suit well qualified candidates but may also suit recent entrants to the profession. This post is a maternity cover from September 2023 to May 2024.

The teacher appointed should be flexible in outlook and be prepared to contribute to our extensive programme of after school activities. Duties outside the classroom include an equal share of break duties with other members of the Junior school staff and two after school clubs each week. A willingness to be involved in school life beyond the classroom is therefore very important. Candidates should indicate what extra-curricular activities they can offer.

Responsibilities of a teacher in Coram House include the following:

·       Supervision, guidance and care of pupils so that they develop academically, morally and socially and supporting children to enable them to achieve their full potential.

·       Sharing responsibility for the general fair discipline of all pupils where the ethos of the school actively promotes values such as empathy, tolerance, trust and respect along with the nurturing of self-esteem.

·       Planning and differentiating work effectively so that all pupils have access to teaching and learning and are given appropriate tasks.

·       Ensuring effective communication both internally and between home and school where our ethos upholds a friendly, open and caring attitude of staff, pupils and parents working together.

·       Organising a classroom base, its resources and displays in order to provide a stimulating learning environment and contributing to displays in designated corridor areas.

·       Writing and collating reports at appropriate times during the year.

·       Undertaking other responsibilities as may be agreed in consultation with the Head of Coram House.
