Job overview

Key Stage 2 Class Teacher Temporary one year contract from September 2018  Westholme School, established in 1923, is a successful independent school located on the rural outskirts of Blackburn. The school is based across 3 sites, providing a first class education to around 800 pupils, aged 3 months - 18 years.   The school becomes fully co-educational in September 2018.   The School is well resourced and facilities across the entire campus are extensive and stimulating, as a result of the Governors’ wise investment plan. Over the last decade over £10m has been spent on capital projects and our students benefit from the all-encompassing provision.    At Westholme we pride ourselves on our holistic approach to education where children are encouraged to fulfil their potential in all aspects of the curriculum and beyond. Hard work and endeavour are recognised and valued as highly as attainment and our positive approach to teaching and learning is underpinned by a supportive pastoral system. A fully rounded education is endorsed at all ages and staff give their time generously to provide an extensive range of activities, clubs, societies and trips which enriches provision for every pupil.  Academic achievement is well above the national average at GCSE and A level and the curriculum is broad and diverse.  Music, sport and drama are flourishing with high levels of participation, numerous successes and awards at national level. The website provides a comprehensive insight into our diverse choice of extracurricular opportunities and multiple achievements.

We seek a well-qualified, dedicated and inspirational graduate to contribute to a highly committed Junior Team with class teaching responsibilities in upper KS2.  The successful candidate will join a friendly and supportive team of 8 class teachers, 6 part-time specialists and 1 teaching assistant. A willingness to contribute to extracurricular activities is essential.   In the Junior School most lessons are delivered by the Class Teachers, although there is specialist teaching in IT, French, Music and PE.  All pupils study French throughout their time in the Juniors and there is a high successful and popular biannual trip to France to develop language and learn about the culture.  Year 6 spend a day a week at the Senior School using specialist facilities and helping to improve the transition for the move to Year 7.  There is real commitment to learning outside the classroom, with regular trips to places of educational interest to support the curriculum.  In Year 6, the pupils spend a long weekend at a residential centre enjoying outdoor adventurous activities and similar opportunities are available to pupils in other year groups as day trips.  An impressive range of co-curricular activities is arranged for pupils.  The programme changes termly but includes: brass band, ballet, choir, cricket, cross country, drama, gymnastics, gardening club, LAMDA, orchestra, recorder group, Sokudo (martial arts), sportshall athletics, dance, string group, swimming, Scrabble club, table tennis, tennis and woodwind group.  Some of these sessions occur over the lunch break and but most take place after school.  Many pupils are given the opportunity to play in inter-school fixtures and all are welcome at training sessions.  The main sports played are hockey, netball, rounders, rugby, football, cricket and athletics.  The School is also very strong in swimming and cross country running, making full use of the excellent sporting facilities found on the Senior School campus.  Culturally Westholme is alive with a wide variety of music groups, choirs, playing and singing including a full junior orchestra; there are many opportunities for pupils to perform in concerts and at festivals.  The School’s theatre is well used by the Juniors for all performing arts.
