Job overview

KS 2 Classroom Teacher: English Specialism

Required for September 2019 an inspirational class teacher with special interest in teaching English to dyslexic pupils. The successful applicant will hold a BDA approved post- graduate qualification in teaching pupils with specific learning difficulties. Ideally the post is a full time one, but we would consider an applicant who wished to teach from 8.30 am and leave at 2.20pm on some or all afternoons.

Calder House is a coeducational preparatory day school whose pupils all have specific learning difficulties of a Dyslexic, Dyspraxic or Dyscalculic nature. We are rated OUTSTANDING by Ofsted in all categories.

The successful applicant will demonstrate enthusiasm and the ability to work successfully with an innovative and creative team. Our teaching approach is to investigate and address the reasons behind our pupils’ difficulties in the classroom, and the successful applicant will wish to broaden their knowledge and skill in this area.

As form tutor of a class of eight the successful applicant will be responsible for maintaining a supportive, orderly and structured learning environment in which pupils start to take responsibility for their own learning, receive support in improving organisational skills and treat each other with respect.

As a subject teacher the applicant will be expected to demonstrate an ability to plan and differentiate lessons to meet each child’s needs including the provision of appropriate challenges. The successful applicant will show they have the ability to earn pupil trust, and evidence that they are a good team player both seeking and giving support to colleagues.  Our teaching groups are eight pupils or less and English is taught in the mornings. In the afternoons pupils study a broad curriculum including science, the Foundation subjects, Latin, Art and the Performing Arts. If full time the successful applicant will be expected to teach a Foundation subject and perhaps primary Latin depending on expertise.

Calder House is a specialist school and is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of its pupils. Candidates must be prepared to undergo appropriate child protection screening including checks with past employers and the DBS.
