Job overview

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding an Upper Primary/Lower Secondary Teacher to commence teaching in September 2024. He/she/they would be expected to teach Year 6/7/8 in the core subject areas, most likely maths and science. This role requires the candidate to have some flexibility to work across the UKS2 classes and lower Secondary classes and support classes with the transition into Secondary. It would be perfect for an experienced Year 6 Teacher who has had, or would like to gain, some experience teaching in the lower secondary classes. Depending on the skillset of the right candidate, this role could be weighted more towards a Year 6 class Teacher role or towards a role in lower KS3. We would welcome applications from both Upper KS2 and Secondary teachers.

The Vijay International School, Praslin is a not-for-profit school owned by an association of parents who have their children enrolled at the school. The school offers educational programmes to children aged 3 years to 18 years, with Year 11 students taking IGCSE and Year 12 and 13 taking A-Level examinations with CAIE (Cambridge Assessment International Examinations). We are a fully accredited CAIE centre. The school opened in 2008 and has grown from 47 children to over 230 during that time, with an improving local and national reputation for developing the whole child whilst maintaining excellent examination results.

We believe in challenging students to achieve their absolute best. We aim to give them a good grounding in literacy and numeracy whilst not forgetting that the other subjects in the curriculum are essential to effective progress and development. Students in Years 1 - 6 follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales with Early Childhood following the Early Years Framework. Year groups 7 - 9 follow the Cambridge International Curriculum which paves the way for the IGCSE and then A-Level years.

We are a small and friendly school and have high expectations in terms of the conduct and behaviour of our students. We have very supportive parents and board members and a relatively slow turnover of students. Our intention is for a local student to complete 15 years of education with us on one site whilst welcoming the sometimes more transient expatriate students from a multitude of different countries. Given the mixed nationalities, backgrounds and languages of our students, meeting the needs of EAL students in all lessons is a priority. We have a strong SEN provision and differentiation plays a significant part of our teaching and learning approach.

Praslin is a small island with a population of just over 8000 people. We feel that it is essential that our students acquire a global perspective and are aware of the different lifestyles and circumstances which exist in other countries.

We invite applications from candidates who hold a degree in Education or another degree and a post-graduate teacher qualification, or who have gained QTS through an alternative route whilst maintaining a specialism in within Primary Education or lower Secondary Education. A minimum of 2 years teaching experience is required and experience of the UK curriculum is essential. Candidates should have a proven track record of delivering high quality teaching and learning to students across the ability range. Previous experience with EAL students would be beneficial. The right candidate will be able to deliver an engaging curriculum, create a secure and stimulating learning environment and motivate children to succeed.

We offer:

• The opportunity to join our outstanding team of international teachers

• Enthusiastic and hard working students

• Supportive parents

• A hard-working and supportive Board of Governors, elected from and by the parent body

• An initial 2 year contract, renewable by mutual consent thereafter for 1 or 2 years

• Good quality private sector housing

• Medical cover

• Outward flight at the start of the contract and return flight at the end

• In addition to his/her flight allocation, a teacher is allowed 75kgs of personal effects.

Please note that we welcome applications from single teachers and teaching couples and we would consider partners with a range of teaching experiences.

Interviews will be taking place on a rolling basis so early applications are encouraged.

Additional details about the role can be downloaded. Please apply through TES and please must include a copy of your curriculum vitae, letter of application and details of at least 2 references, one of whom must be your current Head Teacher. Please do email any questions you may have about this role to lthompson@visp-sey.com and I will happily discuss the nature of the role in further detail.

About Vijay International School

Vijay International School Praslin is a mixed, non-denominational all-through school with sixth form situated in the district of Baie Sainte Anne on Praslin Island, The Seychelles. It is an independent, not-for-profit school that caters for students between the ages of 3-18. A smaller school due to catering for an island of only 6,000 residents, VISP is a place with strong links to the career market, providing opportunities of academic or vocational training. It was successfully inspected by Cambridge International Examinations in January 2013, allowing it to give students the opportunity to gain British IGCSE qualifications. From 2015, the school was allowed to offer A Level qualifications.

VISP opened to students back in 2008, in a location formerly taken by the old government school at Baie St Anne. It was named after the principal school sponsor Mr V.J. Patel, a man whose construction company, Vijay Construction, was behind the building of the school. A school that saw its first Year 11 students graduate in July 2014, its running and continued growth has been thanks to small activist groups committed to improving the educational life on the island of Praslin. The most recent development to the school has been the construction of a sports hall in 2016.
