Job overview

The Royal School is seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Science teacher to lead Key Stage three mixed attainment learning and teaching in the science department in our heavily oversubscribed all-through, day and boarding free school. The aptitude and willingness to teach a range of abilities from ages 11-18 is essential. The ability and enthusiasm to teach with a flair and passion is crucial as well as a flexibility to contribute within the department and to the development of a love of science. We are looking for the best candidate to join the team so all applications are welcome and the ability to teach up to A level would be desired.

Are you the person to stretch, challenge, support and inspire our students in and outside of the classroom?

The Royal School offers significant benefits for its staff:

· Two additional weeks holiday compared to many schools (one week prior to Christmas, one week early in the summer)

· Free breakfast, lunch and evening meals

· Free tea and coffee provided

· Staff laptop

· Cycle to work scheme

· Access to NPQ programmes

· Opportunities for you and your family to attend boarding activities e.g. parties, Alton Towers, visits to cities and museums.

The school’s distinctive ethos and culture where a truly holistic view of the personal development of the child is central to all that we do. The wider ‘enrichment’ programme at this all-through 4-19 boarding and day school is essential and helps develop confident pupils well equipped for life beyond the school. All staff contribute to this extensive programme with their personal interests and to join in with existing activities.

The science department is at an important stage in securing the highest standards of learning and teaching for children in the school community. The department has a central suite of six laboratories and is looking to further the practical, investigative and enquiry driven curriculum at all levels. The school has entered a significant building programme where all areas of this well-established school will be brought up to the very highest standards. The department is eager to improve the standards and ‘passion’ of science for all students and aims to develop scientific reasoning and problem solving whilst still developing the fundamental recall and application skills students need. We currently teach GCSE from year 9, spreading the demands of the new specification over three years, offering the best opportunity for students to fully master all topics. All three sciences are very popular at A-Level. At present, there are two Year 12 and Year 13 groups in biology and chemistry, along with a large physics group in Year 12 and Year 13. Numbers are increasing in our popular BTEC Applied Science classes.

The science team want to build on the positive exam success of previous years, and have highly aspirational pupils at all levels who wish to excel in the subject.

The department is keen to appoint a strong candidate, with a physics or chemistry background, to lead the development of KS3 science and start our senior school pupils on their exciting journey. Opportunities exist to liaise with our primary colleagues in all years, so that transition between the Key Stages is as smooth and effective as possible.

The Royal School is at an exciting time of development. The free school is an all-through (Reception to Y13) ‘independent’ school without day fees whilst still providing excellent boarding at affordable fees. Alongside the growth in pupil numbers, there will be an expansion in the curriculum, enrichment activities and improved facilities, enabling us to extend and enhance still further the range of opportunities for all our young people.

As a result of The Royal School’s excellent CPD programme and the supportive Science team, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop professionally; improve and extend their knowledge; develop skills and experience; share outstanding and innovative practice; and contribute to the development of an exciting, challenging and supportive learning environment in and outside of the classroom

The Royal School has achieved excellent academic results throughout its history and has an outstanding reputation for nurturing and developing confident, well-disciplined and successful individuals who progress successfully to the next stage of their life and career. We relish this next phase in its existence which enables us to review and build on our current success in preparing our young people for a rapidly evolving world. We hope that you will share in this passion for a broader educational opportunity.

Please, visit The Royal School website for further information and details of how to apply and we welcome personal visits to the school to see for yourself this vibrant, heavily oversubscribed school community
