Job overview

Barnhill

Barnhill Community High School is a high-performing school in West London. Our academic outcomes place us in and around the top 5% of the country. The school is heavily oversubscribed and has increased its PAN over the last two years to accommodate the interest from our community. We are a ‘Stand Out School’ in the Challenge Partners Network of Excellence and have links with many training alliances; Teach First, the North West London Teaching School Hub, the Ambition Institute, IoE, Kingston, London Met, Roehampton university and Equalitas. The school is a member of the Middlesex Learning Partnership MAT and we support the learning and management of the primary schools in this successful Trust. Our ethos is based upon the values of ‘Respect, Wisdom, Aspiration and Community’. We are seeking to appoint a dedicated colleague to contribute to the leadership and delivery of the school’s science curriculum.

The Science Department

Barnhill’s Science department is comprised of 15 teachers and 3 technicians in a designated area of the school with 12 labs and other classrooms. The team is led by a curriculum leader and a series of other TLR holders. The senior deputy curriculum leader leads chemistry, while the other deputy curriculum leader leads physics. Assistant curriculum leaders manage KS3, A level course and post 16 medical science. The department has an even mix of specialists for the three disciplines. This role will be as an associate member of the leadership team.

Science has a very strong reputation for examination results. Separate sciences progress 8 scores have been just above of below +1.0 in recent years. A level results are in and around the top 25% of the country. In 2018, KS4 science progress was in the top 100 schools in England. The department has also been a national centre for excellence in the Challenge Partners network.

The role

As a member of the science team and Curriculum Implementation Team, the role is responsible for leading aspects of the implementation and impact of the science curriculum and is accountable for establishing and maintaining high quality standards of classroom practice. As a teacher, the ideal candidate will be motivated and enthusiastic and will inspire colleagues and students to reach their full potential through innovative and engaging lessons.

Our curriculum

Curriculum is at the heart of our school’s excellent offer to its staff and students. Our curriculum is both academic and life enriching. We do not see that these two aims are distinct; rather we treat the curriculum as the tool for educating and developing the whole child.

Barnhill Community High School is part of the Middlesex Learning Partnership, an ambitious cross-phase Multi-Academy Trust. We are ambitious for the students of Hillingdon, ambitious for their futures, ambitious for their achievements and ambitious for their personal development. Students are at the heart of everything we do, and as such we are driven to achieve ever higher standards.

In line with the ethos of the best schools in the country, we are always trying harder, pushing the boundaries of learning and encouraging both students and staff to strive to reach their full potential. We believe in the transformative power of education to Build Brighter Futures and aim to foster within our communities a lifelong thirst for learning and improvement, so vital in a rapidly changing world. Our mission is to ensure that students recognise the importance of learning and are equipped to flourish in the world of the future and that staff are proud of the priceless contributions they make to student’s lives.

We are now looking to appoint a talented and enthusiastic Lead Practitioner for Science to be part of the Curriculum Implementation Team and assist in the leadership and management of the curriculum area, with specific accountability for teaching and learning.

We believe in the power of learning to transform the lives of children and young people and to prepare them well for their futures. We believe that all have great talents and potential, and that we need to provide an outstanding experience so that this can be realised. We are also committed to the broader community. Our Trust sits at the heart of the local area and has a vital role to play as a centre for education, well-being and community cohesion.

Our staff benefit from a well-being scheme, childcare vouchers, cycle scheme and on-site gym facilities.
