Job overview

We are the UK’s first specialist marine academy; a state-funded specialist secondary school with three sponsors (Plymouth University, Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council) who enable us to provide fantastic opportunities for our young people. Marine Academy Plymouth is now an all-through school incorporating a nursery, primary school, secondary school and sixth form, all benefitting from a new state of the art campus. The academy is in a period of transition, exploring exciting partnerships and moving at pace to secure our ambition of ensuring a complete investment in futures for all our young people, starting at the very beginning and flowing through all that we do.

We are seeking an ambitious and committed Lead Practitioner in Mathematics for the secondary school, who will be an outstanding individual and a key player in creating the success of MAP. The successful candidate will develop and implement teaching and learning initiatives and strategies to develop the teaching practice of all members of staff and therefore raise student standards and progress. MAP is looking for an aspirational thinker and an inspirational leader who is ambitious and in search of a unique challenge, which will test his or her skills in a nationally important arena.

The principal will be available to host informal visits and discussions regarding the role. To make an appointment, please contact the Principal’s PA, Michelle Samuel at Michelle.Samuel@marineacademy.org.uk

The Marine Academy Plymouth is not your average kind of academy. We aim to deliver for all learners, to the very highest degree, all the conventional outcomes of education and the Every Child Matters agenda too. Alongside this fundamental aim is our commitment to respecting, relating to and learning from through the environment and in particular the marine environment, which of course represents the heritage of this great city.

The Academy is sponsored by the University of Plymouth, with its world class marine science reputation, along with co-sponsors Cornwall College and Plymouth City Council. The Academy opened in September 2010 on the existing site of Tamarside Community College, but has undergone a major building re-development which now offers state-of-the art facilities.

The aim is to transform education for Plymouth in general and for the school’s community and locality in particular. This will be achieved through a commitment to foundational academic achievement combined with the development of enterprise skills, communication skills and entrepreneurialism, all using environmental and marine themes and the multiple environments in the South West of tourism, leisure, recreation and maritime engineering.
