Job overview

Midhurst Rother College is an 11 to 18 academy located in beautiful surroundings situated inside the new South Downs National Park.  Accommodated in a new £31 million building the College obtained an ‘outstanding’ judgement in all Ofsted categories in 2013.  The College is on a strong upward trajectory of improvement and is very much the school of choice in the local area and beyond.  In order to maintain this momentum the College requires a well-qualified and enthusiastic Lead Practitioner for Mathematics.

Lead Practitioners have a significant leadership role in improving Teaching and Learning across maths and also the College. The post suits colleagues in their third or fourth year of teaching, as well as more experienced candidates. It provides the opportunity for the successful candidate to step into a leadership position and provides a good foundation for school leaders of the future.

The role of the lead practitioner is to work alongside Head of Faculty and Assistant Principal (Teaching and Learning) to develop strong teaching and learning within their department and across the College. This includes working with every member of teaching staff within the maths department, particularly those whose pedagogy requires improvement as well as providing continuous departmental CPD and support to ensure teaching is routinely good or outstanding. This is an ideal leadership role for a colleague with three or four years’ experience (or more!) and is looking to step up to a substantial leadership role, where you will have significant impact.

Responsibilities include:

• Work alongside the Assistant Principal, Teaching and Learning, to develop whole College teaching and learning strategy

• Working with colleagues in the maths faculty to improve the quality of their teaching and learning

• Disseminate the latest/ effective pedagogical developments relevant to improving T&L

• Be part of a teaching and learning team, which delivers whole-college CPD

• Meet with coaching staff within the department and quality assure lessons

• Carry out formal and informal observations of staff

• Create and share innovative/ outstanding resources to improve teaching and learning

• Lead departmental CPD

They will model outstanding teaching and a willingness and ability to teach A-Level maths would be an advantage.

Further details about the role are available from Lucy Owoh (Assistant Principal)  or Justin Baker (Director of Mathematics).
