Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Rowing specialist to help shape the future of Rowing at Emanuel School and build on Emanuel School Boat Club’s rich history of achievement.

As Lead Rowing Coach you will join an ambitious coaching team with a commitment to developing rowers at every level and taking our Rowing programme forward. You will lead either our J15 boys' and girls' programme or our J16–J18 girls' programme, working closely with the Director of Rowing to develop athletes, strengthen performance and create an outstanding Rowing experience.

From designing and delivering training programmes to preparing crews for competition, you will play an important role in developing technical skills, confidence, resilience and a lifelong enjoyment of Rowing. You will also help foster a positive, supportive and ambitious club culture where every rower has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.

We are looking for a motivated and inspiring individual with a strong background in Rowing, whether as an athlete or coach, and the ability to engage, challenge and support young people. You will bring sound technical knowledge, excellent communication and organisational skills, and a genuine commitment to athlete development and wellbeing. A recognised Rowing coaching qualification and RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification are required, although we welcome candidates willing to gain these within the relevant timeframes. Experience of coaching at a competitive level would be advantageous.

Flexible hours will need to be worked and regular weekend working will be required due to the events in the calendar. The successful candidate must be available to work on Saturdays & occasional Sundays to coach.

Working at Emanuel

There is a genuine buzz at the school. Colleagues enjoy their work and, like the pupils, are ambitious for the school.

Everyone works hard here, and anyone joining the school should expect to do so. There’s a strong sense of community and source of friendship. From the briefing to all staff, to the half termly staff meetings, termly consultative group meetings and a common room committee, there’s ongoing dialogue about the school’s aims. Colleagues nominate their peers for termly ACE awards to acknowledge those who best embody the school’s values and a whole staff wellbeing day ensures a collegiate and supportive environment between support and teaching staff.

We aim to look after our staff too. We have an appraisal scheme with a focus on the employee’s professional development; we sponsor postgraduate courses and a range of training opportunities; we offer a healthcare plan via Simply Health that includes counselling and medical support; and we’re committed to supporting staff wellbeing. On a more practical level, all staff benefit from good pension provision and free lunches.

‘Pupils are aspirational in their academic personal and social endeavours, develop meaningful connections within the school and treat each other with kindness and respect.’

ISI Inspection Report January 2026

Welcome to Emanuel

We are a vibrant, fully co-educational school of over 1,100 pupils aged 10–18, supported by more than 200 dedicated teaching and support staff. Emanuel is a community driven by aspiration, connection and empathy: our pupils, colleagues, and families share a commitment to excellence, personal growth, and lifelong learning.

Our latest ISI Inspection report included the rare accolade of a Significant Strength, awarded for our Life Education stating: ‘Pupils develop self-knowledge and empathy, beyond what is expected for their age.’

Our ambition is further reflected in our consistently strong academic outcomes. In 2025 and 2026, the school achieved recording-breaking outcomes at GCSE with6, over 40% of GCSE grades were awarded the top grade 9 and over 70% at 9–8.. At A Level, the picture is similar with 90% of  grades at A*-B and over 90% of students achieving places at Russell Group and top tier universities. Emanuel is now recognised as one of the leading fully co-educational schools in the country.

Our aspirations extend far beyond the classroom. We nurture talent in every field, with a deep commitment to sport, the arts, and STEM. We invest significantly in our facilities, including a £30 million STEM and Refectory building currently to be completed in 2027, which will provide state-of-the-art science labs, maths classrooms, and vibrant social spaces. Our creative arts provision has earned national recognition, including the Independent School of the Year for Performing Arts (2023), while our work in Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion won the Talk Education Award (2024). In 2025 we were shortlisted for Independent School of the Year for Student Wellbeing, and in 2026 highly commended for our work on pupil voice.

Connection lies at the heart of Emanuel life. Our thriving partnerships programme creates meaningful links with the wider community, welcoming almost 400 primary school children to our site each week to learn alongside our pupils. This work was recognised with the Independent School of the Year Award for Community Outreach (2021).

Empathy shapes our culture. Emanuel is a positive and welcoming environment where every individual is valued, supported, and encouraged to thrive. Our talented and dedicated colleagues share a belief in the power of kindness, collaboration, and personal fulfilment. Together, we ensure that staff and pupils alike enjoy a sense of belonging and shared achievement.

We wish you the very best of luck with your application.
