This may be an opportunity that is too good to miss …

Stratford School Academy has been rebuilt through the Government’s Priority School Building Programme. The rebuild includes a Resourced Provision for 20 children with Autism. In September 2016 we admitted our first pupils into the Provision. Plans are well underway and we are now ready to recruit a teacher to lead on the education of children with Autism across our school.

The Resourced Provision is quite different to most and is intended to serve children with Autism who cannot manage in a standard mainstream school (even with TA support etc) but at the same time do not need to be in a special school.

The provision is in fact a series of adapted classrooms, break out rooms, Art, Music, Cooking and PE spaces to allow pupils to go through regulation routines, to deliver occupational therapy and life skills. The focus of our work will be to progressively train our students to manage in mainstream education for an increasing proportion of their time.

Because we are a mainstream school, with an integrated Resourced Provision the lead teacher will be expected to be a competent mainstream teacher and to spend part of the week teaching classes in their specialist subject. This is essential if the lead teacher is to have the credibility to advise and guide mainstream teachers – you have to walk the talk.

We are expanding and in September 2016 we admitted our second 300 strong Year 7 cohort. Over the next three years we will grow to 1500 pupils. We operate two ‘mini schools’ both educating pupils from Year 7 to 11 instead of the usual Upper/Lower School split.

Stratford School Academy is ambitious: we are expanding, have new buildings, have improved our teacher workforce both in terms of readiness and capacity, and the ‘mini school’ approach is innovative. We ask ourselves: what is an ambitious but potentially achievable academic target that, if we did achieve it, would allow us to say with confidence that we are providing our pupils with a top quality education? Our aim is to see 75% of our pupils achieving 5 A*- C EnMa by 2017. In 20156 we achieved 66% A*-C EnMa and so 75% is well within our reach.

We are also ambitious for children with autism: we want to provide a successful mainstream education for children who at the moment just don’t get it.

We have a very clear approach to our work and focus our efforts on what educational research (as opposed to fashion) tells us will really make a difference to student outcomes. We implement this plan through extending systematic shared practice and developing teacher expertise through deliberate practice. Teaching loads are less here than in most schools so that you have the time to plan and teach really good lessons.

If you think this might be the job for you then you should come in and meet us, see the buildings, hear more about what we do and how we do it. If you do want to visit please call Ellie Field on 02072598770. We know that it can be difficult to get out of school and so we can be flexible with times and dates.

At Stratford School Academy you will find:

  • Access to CPD programmes based on progressively introducing proven high impact teaching strategies and techniques through systematic shared practice
  • An excellent induction programme for NQTs
  • Excellent resources and facilities
  • Enthusiastic pupils who are eager to learn with parents who support and value the school
  • The chance to be part of a hard-working group of teachers who are serious about maximising the achievement of our pupils and are willing to go the extra mile to make it happen

About Stratford School Academy

Vision

We are a mixed, all ability, and non-faith school. Our focus is our local community but our outlook is global.  We affirm what we have in common just as much as we celebrate what makes us different.

We believe that education is an intrinsic good that should be enjoyed by all.  As educators we will play our part in forming citizens who have a moral compass and understand and accept their responsibility for the well being of others.

At the same time, as a publicly funded educational institution, we have a responsibility to create public value and to succeed to the best of our abilities against those measures by which we are held accountable.  We accept this responsibility
School is an important step on the road to learning but it is not the only one.

There are some things that we must all learn now and much else that we will need to learn in the future.  We all learn from our families, our communities, our employers and our peers.  To this end we must teach our students not just what they need to know now but also to become independent learners who understand how to learn – people who, when they leave us, can travel the road to education by themselves.

We know that people learn in different ways but that for all of us learning is a social process.  We will use new technologies to accommodate this reality.  We will create a culture at Stratford School founded on finding answers to two questions:  What do we currently know about how we all learn and how can we implement our understanding within our school?  And: What isn't working and how can we make it better?

We will do everything we can with the resources at our disposal to provide each pupil in our school with a personal education that is enjoyable, that leads to appropriate qualifications and that lays the foundation for further learning.
The world in which we live is changing fast, education is no different.  We must therefore create open and flexible structures, both human and physical, that can quickly respond to change.

But we must not lose sight of the students at the heart of our school; we must see the education of each and every one of them in the round and ensure it is conducted in a human scale environment.

No student should be anonymous at Stratford School Academy.
