About the role

In addition to the duties of a teacher, the Base Lead has the following responsibilities:

Teaching and Learning and curriculum:

• Lead and manage the base to achieve the highest possible outcomes for young people who are not thriving in mainstream settings/ have been excluded from previous placements

• Efficiently manage arrangements and communications for all external exams ensuring correct procedures are followed and we are fully compliant with JCQ regulations in the provision.

• Ensure provision/LOTC opportunities are appropriate to the needs of young people on base

• Deliver, plan, monitor and assess curriculum and manage a team of teacher/pastoral support staff to help delivery and embed culture of close collaboration and teamwork across the base

• To ensure that all pupils are taught a range of subjects as identified by the changing needs of the pupil cohort throughout the academic year to ensure the effective delivery of an appropriate and targeted curriculum with a focus on core subjects.

• Keep up-to-date with research and developments in pedagogy and the subject areas

Staff:

• Responsibility for the day-to-day line management/deployment of rota of staff team including regularly monitoring evaluating their performance. 

• Develop staff skills around working with complex and challenging pupil behaviour and support colleagues to develop and implement young people’s individual learning plans, incorporating target setting and ensure pupils progress at expected rates and achieve relevant qualifications according to their level each term

• Ensure comprehensive structure/routines are maintained including regular team meetings, day-to-day briefing and line management, supervision, performance management and development for all staff, including awareness of training needs.

• Oversee recruitment of supply staff and contribute to recruitment of contract staff across the local bases.

• To manage a staff team including teachers, mentors, admin support staff and pastoral leaders, effectively and successfully motivate the team to provide outstanding teaching and learning.

• Ensuring that staff are properly appraised (within the timescales given) through the agreed performance management systems and that appropriate training is provided to meet identified needs. This includes the accurate, and continuous evaluation of staff performance, and when (if) necessary, following the capability procedure. 

• Ensure efficient deployment of staff to maintain good health and safety and wellbeing for all staff and pupils at the base. Ensure that new members of staff are inducted according to the requirements of their role including all relevant training and information about systems, policies, procedures and responsibilities.

Pupils:  

• Assist with referrals/induction/links with parents/carers/liaison with school and assessing suitability

• Manage behaviour, follow school policy on exclusions/behaviour, ethos and attendance, and the implementation of relevant good practice.

• Model positive management of behaviour in an environment of mutual respect which allows students to feel safe and secure and promotes their self-esteem and maintains/establishes good order and discipline among the pupils to safeguard the health and safety of all. 

• Communicate and consult with the parents/carers of pupils, other schools and agencies

Leadership:

• Ensuring that the core values, vision and ethos of the school are fully expressed by the provision.

• Responsible for policies and procedures which support educational achievement for pupils,  

• Support the base Pastoral Lead, ensuring that safeguarding procedures are robust and that good attendance is promoted

• Liaise with multi agencies work collaboratively/attend meetings in schools/with social care where appropriate 

• Have an active role and participate in the selection and recruitment of supply and contracted staff as required and to coordinate and oversee all matters relating to the induction of new staff. Contribute to the professional development of teacher and support staff, including the induction and assessment of new/temporary staff.

• Create a welcoming, safe, calm and attractive environment at the base

• Regularly report to HR - matters of staff discipline, capability and sickness procedures 

• Assist with referrals/induction/links with parents/carers/liaison with school and assessing suitability

• Ensure staff keep an accurate register of students for each lesson.  Take appropriate action on unexplained absences or patterns of absence in accordance with the school’s policy. 

• To meet deadlines as required, completing reports, keeping records and using data accurately and ensure that staff meet requirements for assessment, recording and reporting of pupils’ attainment and progress

• Be a role model to staff and pupils through personal presentation and professional conduct.

• Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues and associate staff across the school and wider MAT

TLR Accountabilities

• The standards (this includes the attainment outcomes, and progress outcomes) reached by all students throughout each Key Stage. 

• The standard/quality of teaching and learning throughout the base.

• Ensuring that specific targets are set by staff that are challenging and appropriate to pupils’ needs.

• The effective and appropriate use of resources

• Analyse and use the full range of evidence, including performance data and external evaluations to support, monitor, evaluate and improve aspects of the base including challenging poor performance

• Have understanding of and assist with implementation of a balanced budget ensuring financial accountability and process is followed

• Ensuring that both internal procedures and JCQ regulations are followed for all external exams.
