Job overview

We are a small school for up to 6 pupils, that is location on site at a residential care home for children with Emotional and Behavioural difficulties. The children reside at the home, which is a therapeutic placement for children who have experience neglect or trauma. The young people attending our school are unable to attend mainstream school for various reasons, but the small classes and bespoke curriculum helps them to achieve.

You will be supported by a TA and work very closely with the home to help these young people reach their full potential.  The ethos of the home and the school will mean there is a huge focus on therapeutic interventions.

The school is currently following AQA education with functional skills in the core topics and PSHE/ vocational awards. Each young person is different, with an EHCP that can be followed to create a timetable and curriculum that maximises learning.

The lead teacher will be responsible for demonstrating learning and education, coming up with strategies and ideas. Coupled with IEP's or Schemes of work. Other duties will include-

- Classroom teaching and ensuring lesson plans drive engagement

- coming up with new ideas on keeping the young people interested in the subjects

- delivering interesting lessons and taking on board feedback from the pupils on what they want to learn

- understanding the young people and how to maximise their successes

- keeping files up to date and ensuring the young people gain confidence through achievements

- writing reports both termly and any daily/ weekly reports the home may require

- attendance logs and admissions register

- attending PEP's and putting together information/ evidence as required by the virtual head, local authority or social worker

- preparing work for the teaching assistant or care home staff to deliver and support the young people with

- updating any polices and procedures

- linking in with the DSL on any safeguarding matters- reporting any concerns and keeping on top of any changes in legislation

- working closely with the registered manager of the home, to ensure best practises and sharing of information as required

- arranging work experience or vocational studies for the young people

- linking in with other educational facilities, such as local colleges for extra curricula activities or preparing young people for independence

- attending any relevant training and keep up to date with changes in legislation

- putting together project work and interesting packs for the young people to work through

- identifying other interesting courses for the young people to follow i.e. an e-learning coding course

The lead teacher must be very flexible and creative in their approach to education, as each young person is very different and will need a varied curriculum.

Someone who has worked with challenging behaviours before or in a similar setting would be ideal. Coupled with a broad experience of teaching various lessons at various age ranges. As the teaching staff team will be small, the lessons will be delivered either by the Lead Teacher, or TA.

Ideally we would like someone who has experience of understanding Ofsted requirements, inspections and has dealt with them directly. As we are a small, new school with the right knowledge it is fairly straight forward to evidence the work being done and how the standards are being met.
