“...This combination of academic achievement, strong pastoral care and wider personal development means that pupils are well prepared for the next steps in their education or training.”

Ofsted Report, January 2024

Forest Hill School is a thriving and aspirational comprehensive school in south-east London, rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted in January 2024. We provide high-quality education to boys aged 11-18 and we are a community that is wholly reflective of this district of London, teaching pupils from all backgrounds and of all abilities. We also have a highly successful joint Sixth Form provision (SFH6) with Sydenham School for male and female students.

A broad and comprehensive curriculum is taught in modern facilities by dedicated teaching staff who are passionate about their subjects and are experts in educating and inspiring pupils to achieve excellence.

Drama is a very popular subject at KS3, with a track record of attracting healthy numbers of students to the AQA GCSE course in KS4. There is then the potential for students to take their study of Drama further in SFH6. The well-resourced department which sits within the Expressive Arts Faculty, which adds significantly to our broad and balanced curriculum.

We are seeking to recruit an experienced teacher of Drama, who will be responsible for developing and delivering the curriculum at key stage 3 and key stage 4. Classroom practice should include

using a variety of teaching methods such as play readings, demonstrations, role-play, performances and discussions, producing plays and sometimes recordings and videos, using a range of materials including music and audio-visual aids. The ideal candidate will be organising and directing drama activities and encouraging self-expression in pupils.

Additionally, we are looking for someone who can further develop our extra-curricular Drama offer for students. This will include the establishment of opportunities for students to participate in school performances and to work with external organisations such as theatres.

Our ideal candidate is

  • An enthusiastic Drama teacher, with proven leadership skills, who is qualified to teach up to Post 16
  • An outstanding teacher who combines a range of innovative teaching strategies with excellent relationships with young people
  • A team player who works well with others and is dedicated to the success of their students
  • Someone who looks for ways to improve themselves and the school and is not afraid of taking responsibility beyond their classroom

We will offer

  • The opportunity to work in an established and experienced school which challenges the stereotypes of underachieving boys in inner city London
  • A personalised CPD programme that offers a range of opportunities to broaden your pedagogical experience and which seeks to support you in developing yourself for future leadership roles
  • Modern, state of the art facilities, including staff laptops, brand new interactive whiteboards, visualisers and the use of excellent ICT facilities with the students

“...The school makes sure that staff have access to high-quality training and development. This includes teachers new to the profession, who are very well supported.”

Ofsted report

Pupils study a broad and interesting curriculum. The school has carefully considered the important knowledge that they want pupils to study. In the sixth form, a wide range of A-level choices is supplemented by several different vocational qualifications. Within subjects, the chosen topics of study have been put together in a logical way. This helps pupils to build on their prior knowledge so they learn more and remember more over time. This means that, from the start, pupils are well prepared for the rigour of GCSEs and for sixth-form studies. Leaders also make sure that content is relevant and interesting for pupils.
