The school was opened in 1951 and is situated in the middle of the Grange housing estate to the north of Letchworth Garden City. We are a county maintained school with the majority of pupils coming from the surrounding area and who have previously attended the nearby Northfields Infant School. The school roll is at present 214 pupils for 2005-2006, in September we are expecting 215 to be on roll.

There is a staffing establishment of 12.4 teachers. This includes two teachers who work in the base for Specific Learning Difficulties and who work in a variety of schools in the Letchworth and Royston area. They address the specific learning needs of identified children and try to help them to make more rapid progress by being taught in small groups or individually for short periods of time in a week.

Our school has a separate non-fiction library in the front entrance, a computer room, a hall with a traditional stage, a separate dining room and a very large field. In addition there are two playgrounds, an environmental play area and a wild area to enable environmental studies to take place within the school grounds.

The school was inspected in July 2001 by OFSTED. A summary of the report is available on request. The school is a very busy one with pupils being given many opportunities in which to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding. We like to give the children as many practical first hand experiences as we can. We know that when children are engaged in an activity or a visit, it is so much easier to recall and then use this knowledge in the future.

The core work is in English, Maths, Science and ICT. A policy for Special Educational Needs (SEN) and more able pupils exists to ensure that whatever a child?s capability, they are having work planned for them that is matched to suit their needs.

Free dinner eligibility at 14% is about average nationally. The proportion of pupils from ethnic groups is below the national average. Just about a quarter of the pupils have been identified with some aspects of special educational needs. We will have one child with a statement for specific educational needs in the school during the academic year 2006/07. This number is well below the national average.

The class teaching of music is supplemented by specialist visiting teachers who offer individual instrument tuition in brass, keyboard and violin. For this provision a charge is made.

Many sporting activities take place and parents are keen for their children to represent the school. The school offers a wide range of extra curricular activities, which the children are encouraged to take part in. These take place during the lunchtime and after school
