Job overview

We are seeking an experienced and committed special educational needs teacher who will be responsible for the school learning centre. We are a 4 year international boarding high school in Rome, Italy. Our students follow a US high school curriculum in grades 9 & 10 and the IB diploma programme in grades 11 & 12.

The primary responsibility is serving the population of students who need assistance with study skills, organization, educational testing, or learning accommodations. This is done primarily by working with students, families, and teachers. The role also requires the facilitation and management of Student Support Team meetings and relevant office administration.

Specific tasks:

Confer with parents, administrators, testing specialists, social workers, and professionals to develop individual learning plans designed to promote durable learning

Work with teachers to develop and adapt conventional teaching methods to meet the individual needs of students

Be available for families on an as-needed basis in person, via phone, and online

Communicate concerns and ideas with colleagues, students, parents and community in a positive, professional and ethical manner regarding students’ educational, physical and social development

Teach study skills to individuals or small groups of students within or outside the class

Use effective teaching techniques and materials to implement established curriculum goals and objectives and to use techniques and materials that motivate the desire to learn

Create educational experiences that provide each student the opportunity to develop his/her potential in the areas of personal-social adjustment, decision-making, positive self-image and other life skills

Use special equipment and facilities, such as audiovisual materials and computers, to stimulate interest in learning

Attend professional meetings, educational conferences and teacher training workshops to maintain and improve professional competence

Meet with other professionals to discuss individual students’ needs and progress

Attend staff meetings and serve on staff committees as required

Attend statutory annual reviews or other related meetings and reviews regarding students with learning accommodations, which may involve reviewing statements of special educational needs

Maintain accurate and complete student records, and prepare learning plans on students and activities as required

Monitor confidential tracking database for returned learning plans

Coordinate with the Director for Teaching and Learning on timetables and exam schedules for students 

Perform other relevant tasks as assigned by the Assistant Head for Academic Affairs


Qualifications:

Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree in the area of learning needs/special education

2+ years working in a relevant learning support position

Demonstrated capacity to engage learners as well as families in the process of discovering and managing learning exceptions

Demonstrated evidence of proficient written and spoken communication

Demonstrated evidence of ability to form and manage teams
