JOB DESCRIPTION

LEARNING CENTRE TEACHER

Shawnigan is seeking a highly motivated and talented Learning Centre Teacher (Inclusive Education) for September 2023.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to both the Learning Centre Director, and Dean of Academics, Learning Centre teachers are expected to

  • Carry assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigan’s prep, planning and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession;
  • Collaborate with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their post-secondary pathways;
  • Be available to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;
  • Managing a caseload of up to 25 IEPs and working with those students in designated learning support blocks
  • Identifying and implementing new trends or ideas in special educational practices
  • Contributing to developing policy for IEP and learning support practices at Shawnigan Lake School
  • Contributing to developing department assessment policies for students who need accommodations
  • Ensuring special educational services adhere to ministry policy
  • Assist the Learning Centre Director with administrative tasks and coordination
  • Be involved in the full Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey.”

 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada or if not, receive all appropriate visa and permissions to legally work in Canada;
  • Hold a post-secondary degree in Education or Post-Degree Professional;
  • Be in possession of, or have already applied for, a British Columbia Teaching Certificate (Independent or Certificate of Qualification);  
  • A minimum of two years teaching experience in a special educational setting, preferably at the secondary level
  • Experience managing and implementing IEPs
  • Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability;
  • Have experience working with teenagers;
  • Have experience working in a boarding environment an asset;
  • Experience instructing a co-curricular such as basketball, rowing, tennis, hockey, music or other. For a full list of our co-curricular offerings, visit our Arts-360 and Athletics program pages;
  • Have strong interpersonal and communication skills;
