Job overview

Blackpool Sixth is an outstanding college specialising in 16-19 education. We have an exciting opportunity for a Learning Mentor to join our team at college. This position, which commences in August 2022, is fixed-term for the academic year 2022/23. This full-time post is 36.25 hours per week over 5 days, staff term time only, however, applications from those wishing to work part-time are also invited. This is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of the college-wide team where you will be supporting a wonderful group of highly ambitious students studying on a range of courses.

Our main goal is to support every individual to fulfill their full potential. As a Learning Mentor, you will be responsible for providing support to a cohort of students who are experiencing difficulties in their learning. You will work with students, teachers and other staff to identify barriers that are preventing individual students from achieving their full potential and agree on an action plan to overcome any barriers. You will mentor students to build their confidence and develop essential study skills so they get back on track with their learning, liaising with teachers and other staff to ensure everything is in place so students can be successful.

This is an ideal post for a person who is passionate about supporting young people, establishing a strong rapport with students, removing barriers to learning and working with individuals to maximise their progress. At the same time, post-holders must be rigorous about maintaining high expectations, standards and discipline in line with college systems.

A day as a Learning Mentor could see you:

  • Delivering one-to-one or small group sessions (up to 5 students)
  • Discussing academic progress, identifying gaps and setting appropriate SMART targets
  • Following up student absences and setting high expectations for attendance
  • Liaising with teachers and wider support teams to help students overcome any barriers to learning
  • Recording and reporting progress and/or concerns

Can you develop effective relationships with students who need 1:1 and small group support? Do you have experience of providing support and guidance to young people? Can you demonstrate a student-centered approach whilst delivering excellent mentoring support? If you have answered yes to these questions then click here  to apply now and find out more about the college.

Closing date: 6th June 2022, 9am

We are a high-achieving sixth form, giving our students an excellent springboard to success. We educate the whole student, providing all with excellent teaching and opportunities for growth and personal development. We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding sixth form. We are relatively small in size, with just over 2000 students and approximately 200 staff. This means that we are a close and caring community.

We serve the whole Fylde Coast area, which includes Poulton-le-Fylde and Lytham St Annes, as well as Blackpool and the surrounding towns and villages. Blackpool Sixth is a friendly, positive and supportive place to work and is rated Grade One: Outstanding by Ofsted (2009). In 2009, we became one of the first organisations in the country to be awarded the Investors in People Gold Award. Staff are committed to the needs and aspirations of our students and supported by an extensive programme of staff development.

Staff are highly committed to the needs and aspirations of our students. The continued growth in student numbers and planned curriculum developments has enabled the sixth form to invest in new staff and new buildings. The college is designated as a Teaching School in partnership with Hodgson Academy and it's a really exciting time to be part of Blackpool Sixth.

All new staff are offered a thorough induction program; this is supplemented for Newly Qualified Teachers with a comprehensive series of training sessions throughout the academic year. All new staff are allocated a mentor in their probationary year, they are here to offer support and guidance in your new role. It's not just teachers that we develop, both teaching and support staff are involved in an annual programme of staff development, supported by individual performance management reviews and training and development plans.

On top of the internal opportunities staff now also benefit from a wider programme of Continuing Professional Development events which come from being part of the Teaching School Alliance, these include nationally accredited programmes.
