Ben Jonson Primary School is a vibrant, three form entry school, situated in the richly diverse community of the Ocean Estate. We are seeking a skilled, compassionate and proactive Learning Mentor to join our pastoral team. The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who experience barriers to learning, including social, emotional, behavioural and attendance-related challenges.
The Learning Mentor will build strong, trusting relationships with pupils, deliver targeted 1:1 and small-group interventions, and work collaboratively with staff and families to improve engagement, wellbeing and readiness to learn.
Key Responsibilities
· Provide 1:1 mentoring for pupils with SEMH, behaviour or attendance needs.
· Deliver small-group interventions (e.g., social skills, resilience, confidence).
· Support emotional regulation using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
· Build positive relationships with families to support consistency.
· Contribute to behaviour plans, risk assessments and pastoral support plans.
· Support pupils during transitions and unstructured times.
· Track progress and maintain accurate records of interventions.
· Work closely with the SENCO, DSL and pastoral team.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
· English & Maths (GCSE A*-C / 9-4).
· Level 3 qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Supporting Teaching & Learning, Youth Work, Childcare, Health & Social Care, Behaviour Support).
· Experience working with children or young people.
· Experience supporting pupils with SEMH, behaviour or attendance needs.
· Strong understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
· ELSA, Thrive, Nurture or Drawing & Talking training.
· Mental Health First Aid.
· Team Teach / de-escalation training.
· Level 4 or Level 5 qualification in counselling, youth work or behaviour support.
· SEND-related training (ASD, ADHD, SEMH).
· Experience supporting attendance.
