Job overview

About the role

Due to the ongoing success of Lonsdale School we are in the very fortunate position of increasing our staff numbers and are seeking to appoint several Learning Support Assistants. We have a variety of roles available for Learning Support Assistants to support pupils in their learning and welfare needs. You will be working as part of a team to provide an enriched learning journey for students in an environment where pupils need regular moving and handling.

This role is for 30 hours per week, term time only. In addition to receiving a full induction and training you will also be given the opportunity for career development and the opportunity to work alongside other Learning Support Assistants and professionals. A flexible, committed, good-humoured approach is required and it is essential you are fit for working in an environment where pupils need regular moving and handling.

Lonsdale is a forward-looking, all-age (3-18 years) Special School for young people with physical and neurological impairments. Our aim is to achieve excellence in meeting the needs of every individual. Pupils are highly motivated and enjoy coming to school, their attitudes are positive and they thrive on creative teaching styles. Lonsdale expects all staff to promote and be mindful of the safety and care of all children and young people. We are very fortunate that our school is recognised as a good school by prospective pupils, parents and professionals working with the school.

The law requires this position to have an enhanced criminal background check. This is to protect children and vulnerable adults and to safeguard positions of trust. The position is therefore exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. If your application is taken further you will be asked to declare details of any criminal record, even convictions that are 'spent' according to the act. If you are offered the post this information will be checked against DBS. You will be provided with full information at each stage.

Lonsdale is a vibrant, happy and flourishing place. We are a special school for young people with physical and neurological impairments (PNI), as a primary need. We provide support for our pupils who often have other SEN needs including speech and language communication, hearing or visual impairment, autistic spectrum disorder, learning difficulties and social emotional mental health needs. All our learners have an EHCP.

People sometimes ask us what is the secret but we don’t see it like that. For all of us who learn, teach and work here, three things in particular matter: belief, ambition and community.

Belief: because we share a vision that shapes each day – to be a safe, caring and open school for each and every one of our pupils, whatever their needs.

Ambition: because we want everyone to reach beyond what they think they can do, to grow and develop throughout their time with us, so that they go onto the next stage of their lives as confident, outward-looking young people who believe in themselves and what they can achieve.

Community: because that’s what gives us our identity. Everyone belongs to the Lonsdale family. We learn from each other, we listen and support one another. Pupils, staff and parents work together. That’s how we provide so many exciting opportunities, that’s what gives us the confidence to do so much. We’re even more proud of the fact that we can offer our pupils such a diverse interesting and well-taught curriculum and that our older students take GCSE and BTEC courses which lead them onto college places and higher education.

We don’t neglect sport and the arts. We are a National Wheelchair Hub School and Youth Sports Trust Innovation School. We have links with arts organisations, and we take our pupils out of school to learn, to take part and contribute to the world around them.  We want to ensure that Lonsdale’s pupils have skills and qualifications, that they are resilient and that they have the confidence to take on the many opportunities that lie ahead of them.

Lonsdale – Learning for Life!
