Job overview

We are recruiting for a Learning Support Assistant to work in our Supported Internship Programme based in Islington, Central London. This is a full-time (37.5 hours per week) permanent post. 

We support adults with a learning disability to access volunteering and paid work. Our team deliver relaxed classroom-based sessions to young people with a learning disability, aged between 16 and 25, to prepare them for work, and support them to improve their numeracy and literacy skills.

The successful Learning Support Assistant will be enthusiastic, motivated, and can keep our learners engaged in sessions. Having the ability to build a strong, positive relationship with others is an important part of the role.

Working on Mencap’s Supported Internship, you will have the opportunity to support young people with a learning disability to understand the world of work and develop the everyday literacy and numeracy skills they will use in their workplace.

Through collaborating with the tutor, the Learning Support Assistant will help our interns engage in a creative and lively curriculum that empowers them to recognise their unique skills and qualities, their place in the community and the structure and security provided by sustainable employment. Along with Mencap staff and other volunteers, you will be supporting people on a 1:1 basis and in small groups.

Key Responsibilities for this post (but not limited to):

  • To support with the planning and organising of learning activities for learners
  • To differentiate learning materials to an appropriate level according to need in line with individuals Education, Health and Care Plans and learning needs
  • Under the guidance of the tutor, contribute to setting challenging and meaningful individual targets to promote self-esteem and independence and to the review of those targets
  • To monitor the progress of identified learners, keep written records and provide the tutor with feedback on learners’ progress
  • To assist in the production of appropriate teaching materials
  • To support learners in developing employability skills including travel training
