About Ellingham Hospital and School

School Profile

Oakview is a child and adolescent in-patient service that provides a safe and secure environment for young people with complex mental health needs. Many of the young people are treated under The Mental Health Act; all have special educational needs including emotional and behavioural needs, language and developmental delays, specific learning difficulties and/or disorders such as ADHA and Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

The service has two hospital sites, one in the London Borough of Bromley at St Mary Cray (Oakview London) and the other in Attleborough, a small town in Norfolk (Oakview East Anglia).

Oakview London provides low secure accommodation primarily for young people detained under the Mental Health Act. Oakview East Anglia provides similar accommodation primarily for young people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours. The two independent hospitals provide a specialist service for NHS England patients.

As residential hospitals for young people aged from 12 – 18 yearswe are required to provide education on site in a school that is Ofsted compliant. There is a structured hospital timetable on each site that includes attending school during term times. The teaching staff are responsible for managing the curriculum but have the opportunity to use the expertise ofeach hospital’s multi-disciplinary team and work collaboratively with the doctors, nurses, psychologists, speech& language therapists and occupational therapists.

Oakview School

Oakview School has been registered as a company limited by guaranteed (a not-for-profit company). The school hasapplied to the Department for Education for registration as an independent school and is also applying for charitable status.

The school is a complex organisation with an Assistant Headteacher responsible for the day-to-day management of Oakview School East Anglia and a Headteacher based at OakviewSchool London who oversees and supports the Assistant Headteacher, visiting the school at Oakview East Anglia as required. There is a designated teaching team for each school site.

Each site offers its own discrete school facilities. The site in London is currently under major redevelopment and a new school building will be available for use from early 2014. Oakview London will increase its capacity from 18 to 40 beds and the school will expand and develop accordingly. There are similar plans to develop Oakview East Anglia which currently has 25 bedsbut will increase to 40 beds. Oakview School East Anglia consists of classrooms on each ward and a detached school building within the hospital grounds.
