Mayville has been at the heart of Southsea life since 1897, and to this day, we continue to follow our founding philosophy of educating the 'whole child' – 'The head. The hands. The heart. Our ethos serves to instil a lifelong love of learning in every pupil. Throughout our Nursery, Junior & Senior Schools, studies and activities are inclusive and structured to meet the needs, challenge the expectations, and exceed the goals of each individual.

We have high academic standards and strive to achieve the best outcomes for our pupils. We also believe learning should be fun and that happy children flourish in an environment that values and promotes inclusivity, community, and a sense of belonging. This is the balance at the heart of our ‘whole child’ approach, and we deliver this, in practice, through our independent curriculum, small class sizes, and first-rate pastoral provision.

Mayville has always offered a ‘whole child’ approach to education that values every child’s unique talents and interests. Small class sizes enable us to know each pupil and tailor their individual development throughout their school life.

There is no 'one size fits all' approach to education at Mayville. We value every child’s unique talents and interests and provide a bespoke educational programme for each pupil, which acknowledges the importance of developing personal character alongside academic achievement. Our small class sizes ensure that all pupils receive additional support or extension, as appropriate, in order to help them achieve their own personal best.

We pride ourselves on being renowned as a creative school and we know that a number of parents choose Mayville specifically for this reason. Our independent curriculum allows us to timetable lessons in dance, music, drama and visual arts, alongside regular performance opportunities. Our pupils also benefit from flexibility and invaluable support when auditioning, performing or competing outside of school. However, it is our firm belief that creativity in learning is central to the development of essential problem-solving and lateral thinking skills in all children and this underpins our whole ethos.

Our very youngest children are integrated into the broader life of the school from the outset – benefiting from shared facilities and specialist teaching, and other events throughout the year. This continuity helps to ensure a smooth transition into the next stage of their educational journey.

Wyvern House - Secondary Special Educational Needs Setting

Mayville’s co-educational alternative provision offers a calm environment for children between the ages of 11-16 with a range of neurodiversity needs including ADHD and ASD, to build confidence and prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey. Wyvern House is a day school only.

Our child-centred approach provides pupils with the care and emotional support they need to flourish. At the heart of this provision is a large multi-disciplinary team, which includes occupational therapists, a speech and language therapist, ELSA and one-to-one learning specialists, such as dyslexia and dyscalculia tutors. However, we aim to take a flexible approach for each child so that we build the right package of support, therefore other needs may be accommodated.

Learning experiences are delivered in line with the outcomes of the EHCP's. Small group teaching, one-to-one support and partnership with our broader main school resources ensure that all pupils have the structure and security they need to become the best versions of themselves.

We offer wraparound care and a holiday club that runs for 50 weeks a year, along with a wide range of after-school extracurricular clubs and activities.  Every child at Mayville is given the space to identify, develop and achieve their own unique potential.

A school is more than its buildings or infrastructure – it is the pupils, the teachers, the whole support staff, the smiling faces and laughter-filled playground, parents chatting at the school gates. Mayville is about the whole community and how we come together as part of a wider family, to support one another and nurture every child, to identify and develop their own unique talents and achieve their own personal best.
