Job overview

We are a mainstream independent boarding school looking for a Maths/Physics specialist to work on an individual basis with a deaf teenage girl. The pupil has bilateral cochlear implants and is therefore able to communicate clearly orally and has no need to use sign language. This is a two year fixed term post to support the pupil through her A Level courses starting in September 2019. She also has dyslexia with full-time use of a laptop to aid with writing and note-taking. The role is primarily term time only.

You will have Maths A Level (or equivalent) and will be a graduate with a Maths-focussed degree (for example Maths, Physics, Economics, Engineering or similar). No experience of working with deaf children is necessary but you must enjoy working with young people and be available and willing to attend courses for training if necessary before the academic course begins in September. Driver essential.

The role will involve  pre- and post-teaching support of the subjects, attending classes with the pupil, ensuring instructions and teaching are heard and understood, note taking and scribing, and helping with the preparation for exams. You will also be required to attend external meetings from time to time.

In return we offer a competitive salary, generous school holidays, pension scheme, a pleasant working environment and free meals and refreshments during working hours. Accommodation may also be available for the right candidate.

Ofsted report

“There is positive leadership and a proactive approach to the health and well-being of the boarders. The health centre provides an outstanding service to the whole school. The welfare of pupils is at the heart of all the work that is done and the systems that are in place to support this aim. The pupils are well protected from harm with a written child protection policy that is regularly reviewed. The headmistress is the designated person in charge of child protection and works closely in this area with other members of the leadership team. Good attention is paid to overall health and safety matters supported by robust policies and comprehensive risk assessments.”
