Job overview
As a Learning Support Mentor you will be required to act as positive role model to the pupils. Develop 1:1 mentoring arrangements with pupils which enable the pupil to agree plans and targets to move forwards. You will be supporting pupils’ access to learning using appropriate strategies and resources and providing feedback on pupil’s progress as required.
Desired Experience
- Experience of working with children of relevant age
- Experience of working with pupils with additional needs
Education/Qualifications
- Numeracy and literacy skills equivalent to Adult Basic Skills level 2
- Completion of the National Learning Mentor training is desirable
Knowledge/Skills
- Understanding of principles of child development and learning processes and in particular, barriers to learning
- Developing knowledge of Local Authority, local and national organisations which can provide services and activities to support pupils and broaden and enrich their learning
- Ability to relate well to children and in particular to motivate children to engage in the learning process
- Ability to work effectively with parents/carers and a range of professionals
Shaftesbury School is 11-18 school which also has an international boarding house facilities serving over 90 students. Shaftesbury School is successful in gaining good results for its students at both GCSE and A-level. The Sixth Form consists of 177 approx. students. Its students have an excellent record of success in gaining university entrance, including to Loughborough and the Russell Group, and in challenging courses. We are a very proud school which attracts students from around the local Dorset area.
Shaftesbury School is a wonderful place to work and has a special atmosphere and feel. It became an academy in June 2014 to sustain the quality of our outstanding provision. Shaftesbury is a beautiful rural country town that has easy road and close rail links to London, Bath, Bristol, Exeter and the glorious Dorset coast.
Teachers make lessons stimulating and practical. They have excellent subject knowledge. Students are reflective, behave with courtesy, and are involved in working with staff to improve the school and the welfare of others.
Our special culture and ethos focuses on high achievement both personally and academically which comes from the tremendous work of all our staff and the great achievements of our students.
