Learning Support Teacher

Tenure: Permanent, part time (2 or 3 days per week)

Start Date: September 2026

Salary: Competitive, based on the Surbiton High School Pay Scale

Are you a caring, skilled and reflective teacher who is passionate about supporting pupils with specific learning difficulties to achieve their full potential? This is an excellent opportunity to join a well established and highly regarded Learning Support Department within a thriving Senior School.

As a Learning Support Teacher, you will play a key role in helping pupils from Year 7 to Year 13 overcome barriers to learning, develop confidence and independence, and succeed both academically and personally. You will work closely with pupils, parents and colleagues, supported by the Head of Learning Support, to deliver high quality, tailored provision that meets individual needs.

The Learning Support Department is a busy and successful team of 18 staff supporting around 160 pupils. You will be part of a collaborative and professional environment where expertise is valued and development is encouraged.

What you will do

You will deliver high quality learning support through individual, paired and small group teaching, creating a positive and inclusive learning environment where pupils feel secure, valued and motivated. You will plan and deliver subject based and skills based lessons that address specific barriers to learning, including study skills interventions where appropriate.

You will monitor pupil progress carefully, using assessment and prior attainment to adapt support and implement effective strategies. You will work closely with classroom teachers, academic mentors and parents to ensure pupils receive consistent, joined up support. You will also contribute to the development of learning support schemes of work, resources and intervention programmes, supporting pupils through key transitions including preparation for higher education.

Alongside your teaching role, you may act as a Form Tutor or Deputy Form Tutor and contribute to the wider life of the school through co curricular activities, trips, meetings and parents’ evenings. You will uphold high standards of pastoral care, safeguarding and professional conduct at all times.

What you will bring

You will have a good honours degree and a strong interest in supporting pupils with specific learning difficulties. A postgraduate teaching qualification with QTS is desirable but not essential. Qualifications or experience in SpLD support, specialist assessment or study skills teaching would be advantageous, as would experience working with pupils with learning differences such as dyslexia, ADHD, ASC or organisational and communication difficulties.

You will be an excellent communicator with strong organisational and ICT skills, able to work collaboratively and sensitively with pupils, parents and colleagues. You will bring warmth, professionalism and high expectations, alongside a flexible and reflective approach to your work. A commitment to Surbiton High School’s ethos, safeguarding responsibilities and your own professional development is essential.

Why join us

You will be joining a supportive and ambitious school that values specialist expertise, professional growth and inclusive education. This role offers the opportunity to make a genuine difference to pupils’ lives while developing your own practice within a collaborative and forward thinking team.
