The Post

We are looking for a well-qualified, experienced and energetic Learning Support teacher to provide a maternity cover from March 2021. The successful candidate will have experience of teaching maths, literacy and study skills, an understanding and empathy with the needs and concerns of the secondary age group (11 – 18) and an awareness of current national educational policies and initiatives within SEND.

Applicants should have excellent pastoral skills along with innovative teaching strategies to help pupils make good progress and achieve their best.

Candidates will be expected to take an active role in the pastoral care of our pupils which is based on a house system, with vertical tutor groups.

The Department

Learning Support is provided throughout the School either in small groups or individual lessons in Maths and English. There is a small team of specialist teachers.

The number of pupils at Sutton Valence School with identified Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (LDD) is currently 200 pupils. These difficulties range from mild to moderate needs with pupils following a standard curriculum. A small number of pupils do not study a Modern Foreign Language and receive additional support for Mathematics and Literacy.

Main Responsibilities

These will include:

  • Teach pupils as individuals or in small groups;
  • Carry out screening assessments of pupils;
  • Devise the learning support plans for individual pupils;
  • Develop and carry out appropriate programmes of work;
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, parents and outside agencies.

Additional Information

The salary will be at the appropriate point on the Sutton Valence pay scale. Staff can use the excellent fitness facilities in the Sports Hall in the evening. The School operates a contributory pension scheme which is open to all members of staff. Sutton Valence School is built upon an educational ethos that not only adds value to our students’ academic potential but helps to develop them into confident and independent young adults who leave the School appreciating the community values that underpin all that we do. The focus that we place upon our community is undoubtedly one-of-a-kind, nurturing an environment where each cares for all but individuality is also truly cherished.

As our excellent results attest, academic achievement is paramount here at Sutton Valence School. Our success at adding value to a student’s potential is not only something that we pride ourselves on but equally, something that sets us apart. Measuring the improvement of every child as they progress along their educational journey not only contributes towards the students staying engaged and focused, but also ensures that their hard work is reflected in their results.

The strength of the School’s community ethos is a fundamental part of what makes Sutton Valence School so distinct. As a School, we are large enough to deliver a varied and specialised academic and enrichment provision, yet small enough to allow us to get to know every student individually, providing the best of both worlds. By keeping the numbers low, we ensure that all of the students feel recognised and supported, not just by their own teachers, but by the School community as a whole. By achieving this, we create an environment where pupils can be challenged, where they have the confidence amongst peers to be curious and above all, where their contributions can be harnessed to the benefit of all.
