Tes is supporting the appointment of an enthusiastic teacher to join a friendly and hardworking SEND team as a Learning Support Teacher on a permanent basis. The post holder will assist the SENDCo in the provision of in-class support for children with perceived learning support needs. The school are looking for someone who has a keen interest in the care, learning and development of young children and has a positive approach to inclusive practice.

If you are a highly motivated teacher who possess exceptional organisational and communication skills, work well with colleagues and have the ambition to contribute to one of the leading independent schools in Sussex, they would love to hear from you. This role would suit someone with experience in State or Independent schools. 

Job Purpose and Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide learning support for the pupil in withdrawal situations, either 1:1 or small groups.
  • To develop knowledge of the particular needs of the child and seek advice from the class teacher and outside agencies as required.
  • To aid access to the full range of learning experiences and provide modified materials as required e.g. worksheets, games, visual prompt cards
  • To make or modify resources as suggested and advised by the Educational Psychologist or other outside agencies.
  • To organise and maintain an inclusive learning environment.
  • To support the pupil to develop independent skills and avoid unnecessary reliance on adults.
  • Motivate and encourage the pupil to have a go at activities they may be unsure of.
  • Provide positive reinforcements, praise and rewards.
  • Facilitate inclusion in small group activities with peers and support interaction between them.
  • To attend in-service training and meetings relevant to the post in order to keep up to date with developments in working with children with special educational needs.
  • To work as part of the team to ensure that the well-being and personal development of the pupil enhances their learning opportunities and life skills.
  • To provide regular feedback to the class teacher, Head of Learning Support and relevant outside agencies about the pupil’s difficulties and progress.
  • To contribute to the pupil’s annual review by writing a brief report and attending the meeting.
  • To foster links between home and school.
  • To understand and apply the school policies on learning and behaviour, and the statutory guidelines relating to disability discrimination and special educational needs.
  • To maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to the pupil’s needs, but to adhere to the safeguarding procedures of the school.
  • To carry out duties as directed by the Head of Learning Support.
  • To follow all policies and procedures.
